Pipe and cigar talk

So Redbeard are you enjoying the pipe or the cigars more? I’ve only ever smoked a handful of cigars. Never smoked a pipe. In general which one is cheaper after you have a pipe?
100% more enjoyment from a pipe. I have 5 cigars leftover that I may honestly never smoke; probably going to be giveaways to my buddies

Bought a starter package from Whitlucks for $37. Kit came with a pipe, a sweet canvas pouch, 3-in-1 tamper tool, pipe cleaners, and a leather pipe stand. Seemed like an OK pipe (Applewood I think). Flavor definitely went off the chart though when my Missouri Meerschuam corn cob pipe showed up the other day. Those things are ~$8/ea. Can't imagine buying a different kind of pipe now. I see no reason to invest in a pricey briar or meerschuam.

Think smoking a pipe is cheaper also. Figure $6-$10/cigar vs $3/oz of tobacco. I'm about 12 bowls into a 3oz tobacco stash and I've barely put a dent in it (bought 1oz of three different flavors to begin with for a total of 3oz).

I believe that quality pipe tobacco is *much* cheaper than *quality* cigars.

Here is my stash. I’m a very occasional pipe/cigar smoker.

Pipes are by far my favorite for flavor and cool factor.

Cigars are nice for a quick grab and go set up.

I got the little travel humidor deal cause I only keep 2-4 cigars on hand at a time.

Pipe guys - how long does it take to smoke a typical pipe bowl? Smoking at an appropriate pace to maintain optimal temp, well-prepared, etc? I've been a cigar guy exclusively but thinking of giving the pipe a try and curious what to expect.

What else would I need beside the pipe and tobacco?

Not a seasoned pipe smoker (just started) but I have been sitting outside each time for ~45 minutes. Corn cob was a hair faster the other evening at ~30 minutes. I've read it can be done in 25 though.

You got the essential bits. Might want to pick up a Mason jar to keep your tobacco in and a combination tamping/reamer tool. That's really all you need. Misplaced my tamper/reamer the other day and used the pocket knife below instead. Turns out, I didn't even miss the combo tool.

30-45 min is pretty average for me. I also keep my tobacco bags in a mason jar like red beard said. I have a special pipe lighter but it’s not necessary. Then the tamping device.

You've got more experience than I do...

Pipe/cigar guys - any suggestions on good high-quality pipe blends? Not particularly interested in aromatics. My tastes in cigars tend to run towards e.g corojo, habano, cameroon, sumatra, nicuragua natural wrappers in the medium to full-bodied flavor range. Much less into maduros as I find a lot of them too one-note sweet in a lot of cases. Occasionally a really good connecticut. Favor flavor notes in the woody/spicy/earthy/leather range for the most part.

I realize that I listed probably most of the common wrapper types...in general I have a pretty varied palate. I just don't love the sweeter "darker" maduros onless they've got a more savory/spicy backbone.

So probably looking at more robust english blends I guess. as a starting point.

Dont forget to factor in the new Federal Tobacco tax thats about to drop. I think its gonna double the current tax. I highly recommend tamper, reamer as opposed to a knife. Too easy to scratch the bowl (maybe not a big deal on an $8cob) or knock some of that beautiful cake off. Also remember, you should dedicate a particular tobacco/flavor to one specific pipe rather than continuously hop pouches. Learn to prepare and pack bowl correctly as to avoid “tongue bite” from over heated tobacco. If you feel the bite, stop smoking or it could put you off of pipes for the newbies. I started pipe smoking in 2003 while working at a store in high school and had an old Man regular come to shop with his wife but he would sit outside on bench and smoke. This was the best time to go on the cart collection run for the smell and infinite wisdom he had. From then on, I could never really enjoy cigars.

I stocked up from pipesandcigars.com a few years ago so I’m currently sitting on some bulk waiting on the world to end. I can definitely recommend their Hearth and Home offerings. And ordering in bulk is definitely the way to go. Mason jars can store tobacco for decades. Also I’m partial to a steel nail for my tamper/reamer but I did make an awesome looking one out of a pointy river rock jammed into a .357 casing, which of course I lost.

Pipe is 95 percent cheaper. But has a higher learning curve. Say you have a pipe and tools. You spent x amount of dollars. Decent cigar 6-10 bucks depending where you live and last for one maybe two smokes. Once you find what you like pipe wise. 25 - 35 dollars for a pound. A pound is around (assuming around 3 grams per bowl about 15 bowls per 2oz or 120 bowls per pound). Some tobaccos are cheaper some are more expensive. Once you have a good pipe and cheap cleaners (3 bucks every 25 or so bowls). 15 bucks for a good cob (you need two. One for English one for aromatics) it is easy to see how much this saves you. I use about 4 grams a bowl and that will last me 45 or so minutes. I’m still smoking tobacco from 2015. It keeps better and is easier to keep. No humidor required.

The economics seem pretty clear. Especially if buying locally rather than ordering by the case online and maintaining a well-stocked humidor that cigar price can easily jump by a bit, and the high-end of regularly available pipe tobacco seems much less expansive than that of premium cigars (although you can doubtless spend big coin on pipes if you choose...).

I'm not sure about the "keeps better" as quality cigars age beautifully when stored properly. But easier to keep for sure.

I have another pipe question. One reason I hardly ever smoke a cigar is I don’t have many chances to sit down alone for 30 minutes or an hour to smoke one. I know that one of the main attractions to smoking a cigar is the relaxing part of it. I’m usually trying to rush through it or smoke one while walking through the woods and that doesn’t work well for me. So back to my pipe question. Can you put less tobacco in the bowl so you can have a shorter smoke time? This has me interested.

By keeps better I simply mean you don’t need anything but a mason jar. No humidor required. No humid packs required. Aged cigars are great but take upkeep. Pipe tobacco does not really as long as jar has a good seal. I learned from an old cat (thanks Jerry for time you took to show a 19 how to smoke a pipe) how to properly smoke one, don’t let my 34 yo dad bod fool you. I smoke like an 85 yo codger. I see a lot of posts of how many relights y’all do. So I will start by saying I relight 0 to 1 times per 45 min bowl (depends how much I’m talking).

Let me pass on the wisdom I learned. Now it should be stated this does not apply during break in period for a pipe. If you want a break in post for each kind of pipe I can do that. If you have a seasoned pipe. Remember the story of goldilocks. Baby bear, mama bear, papa bear. This is how you pack a pipe. If you all want to go over flake, plug or rope let me know. But for standard rubbed out ribbon baccy here is what I do.

English tobaccos do not have any toppings or additives and are my preferred tobacco blends. They burn better and require less drying time but the room note is not as pleasant. The key is to wait. Most tobacco is too moist to smoke up front. Even with English. Here’s a tip. Pack you pipe a half hour before you plan to smoke it. Or lay how much you think you will use out before hand. This dries out the tobacco and it will light better.

For our aromatic smokers (anything that has added flavor). IE if you smoke cherry tobacco you smoke an aromatic. Let your tobacco dry for an hour in the bowl or out before you light (flake even longer). It’s wet. It has flavoring added. Usually some liquid or other topping. And wet stuff don’t burn well.

The pack. Fill your bowl pack to roughly half. Fill again pack to 3/4. Fill again and pack to just below top. Baby bear mama bear papa bear. Then test the draw. Should be tighter at top and looser at the bottom. Tight at top for burning and loose where you draw. The idea is cool temp smoke.

The light. Y’all will hopefully thank me for this later. No torch lighters (unless you like buying new pipes). Butane soft flame, matches, or those little pieces of cedar at the smoke shops. Everything else adds an unpleasant taste, no zippos (they use kerosene yuck). With matches let the tip burn off before you touch the pipe. With pipe you have one to two false lights. You inhale lightly to char the top tobacco and once it’s lit tamp it down lightly. You will have a small amount of ash on top and pipe goes out. Repeat this process if necessary. Once you have a layer of ash on top light for real and you will know when lit. It will kinda flare up. Then Smoke and tamp to keep the fire going down the bowl. Tamp first and then dump every Five to ten minutes. When tamping, you don’t have to press down with any force. The weight of the tamp tapping the top while inhaling lightly is fine. The key is let enough ash build up to dump. Too much ash and the pipe goes out. To little and you dump your fire (we’ve all done it). If you feel your pipe is going out. Cover half the bowl with your fingers and inhale a few times. This will help it bring new life to fire inside the bowl.

Blends
Aromatics: bullseye flake, Peterson holiday, hearth and home anniversary kake, Peterson university flake, any navy flake (so good), Etc.

English:
Gl pease maltese falcon (my favorite since frog Morton is no longer made), Jack knife plug, and Westminster. Early morning pipe, night cap, Sam g pure Virginia, Larry’s blend, and many many more

pipes and cigars website. Realistically anything from Hearth and home, Sam gawith, gl pease, etc are all solid. If you need help post here and I will walk you through it. Smoking a pipe is not hard but it helps if you are shown what to do.

I may not kill many deer. But I can talk pipes for a hot minute.

Yes and they have small pipes that are 10-15 min smokes too. Also you can just stop and dump it out. Very little waste. Corn cobs have a couple really small pipes. Half filling a briar is actually how you start to build cake. Half filling any pipe is totally fine.

All of this! Everything. Plus that Anni Kake.

God I wish McClellan didn’t close shop. frog Morton was the bomb. Maltese falcon is right up there though if you liked the frog.

Have not read all 8 pages of replies so take this for what it’s worth. JRCigar.com sells cigars that are every affordable. They claim to use the same tobacco from the big dog brands and then just roll it themselves. I would imagine 75%+ of casual cigar smokers cannot tell the difference. You can even look them up by the brand name they mimic. For me personally- the Montecristos are a great mild smoke.
