Platform Aider

Well, I had very little issues with my setup. The main thing slowing me down was the way I was tying off. It was difficult to untie, especially in the cold. A cam cleat would be the best way to go forward with this method. I would say, just like one sticking, you gotta rappel. I put the whole season into platform climbing and I think it’s great! I would recomend it to anyone that has been one sticking.

That all being said, I have made a major change in climbing. I picked up a lwhc from redsquirrel... BUT, I am using the same 2 step aider on it! It’s really pretty awesome. Set the lwhc at chest height, climb the aider, slip my feet in, and I’m off. Once I hit a limb I hang above it, remove lwhc, strap it on above the limb, and climb the aider right past the limb. I only have a few hunts on it but it’s pretty slick so far with zero practice. It’s only going to get better.

Thanks for the insight. I’ll have to give it a try. Really no reason not to as all I’ll have in it is adding the aider. I’m worried I’ll miss my cam cleat from the stick, but I’ll just have to see if it’s worth the trade off.

Lwhc with aider sounds like a cool combo. Glad it’s working for you. The hand climber is really the only climbing method I haven’t tried yet.

Thanks again for the response.

I found the same thing. I used my predator platform with a homemade webbing aider, two separate loops and it worked great.

What are you using to attach the predator? The cam buckle strap, daisy chain, or something else?

Does anyone attach a similar ladder-style aider but on a spot closer to the tree? That way you can go toe to tree? Seems like your knee would hit the platform though.

That was something I was gonna experiment with, as there are multiple points to attach the aider onto a predator. But judging from everyone’s experience it doesn’t sounds like it’s much of an issue on the far edge.

Guys! You can put it anywhere! Even on the end of my klemz my toes still hit the tree. I did move the aider in one “rung”. If you’re too close to the tree it makes it more difficult to get your foot in if you are climbing down since it’s now under the platform.

You can attach the aider however close or far from the tree you like. Mine is all the way out,and one has to climb a little bow legged to get past the platform.

I've been meaning to give this a try with my ridge runner. I attached a single step aider the other day and played around a little bit in the yard. Going to make up a 2 step aider tonight. Thought about buying some versa buttons to attach to platform for easy aider attachment. First I will see how it goes climbing 20. Feet. Ive been one sticking all season with my shikar and scout. Would like to see how this works.

I haven used the hand climber for hunting yet so I don't have much to say about the 4 step aider
but I definitely use all 3 steps on the 3 step aiders
I prefer not to have a large step up for my first move after setting the stick or platform and I set my tether high as I can reach so I can set the stick high to get max height per stick movement
I'm 5'9"

If it works for ya, good! I really like using mine on the climber. It lets you get high above the cone shaped base of the trunk that some trees have. It cuts down on time and adjustments.

Ok,i can see three steps being used for smaller step spacing. Like Wirrex said,if it works for you that's great.

with the aiders hanging down like that I would think they would cause movement in any wind and deer wld catch that motion
if it's windy enough to blow the aider around, there will be other things (branches, leaves, etc) blowing around too. I don't see any issues there honestly.

Just got done doing several 20 foot climbs with a 2 step aider and my ridge runner platform. I am really liking this method. I need to revamp my aider a little so I can loop it on the buttons and still maintain a 17 inch step. I'll try that but I still think I'm going to get versa buttons and attach them to the front of the platform. I like the platform method alot.

If you are one sticking and using a platform it just makes sense.
