Had a few sticks of conduit sitting around, and figured it should be good material for building a shooting platform. I really like the wild edge step design and think this can be easily reproduced in my lil fab shop. For the time being I will be working from that design.
 
Step 2: Run out of argon :( no more TIG switch to MIG
MIG isn't my favorite choice for welding coped joints, but will have to do for the proof of concept phase

I remember someone mentioned having bike pedals as platform steps, sounded like a cool idea so lets run with that.

with the pedal cross bars this style does not cam over very well and leaves the bottom support partially floating until weight is added.

That one with the green strap may need the strap to go underneath. Im guessing it cant bc it hits the back bars when tieing and it leaves too much slack. Consider cutting the weld closest to the tree. Continue the bend until it matches up with the cross member so you can tie off there.

I tried running the strap above and below the back crossbar. No joy egither way. That design will need a second generation.
 
How much does that weigh? I actually bought pretty much the same parts around six months ago but never went through with it. My brother is a welder and he never had time to weld it up for me. Following this....
 
testing synopsis:
platform size is adequate enough to shoot 360 without swinging around the tree. Standing on the extreme front edge feels a little springy, but that is to be expected at this time. The overall size will need to be made smaller in order for an aggressive cam over.

Later design note/thought: When powder coating, shoot a base coat, then hot coat, sprinkle sand on the hot coat for added grip
 
Have you considered what you'll do about leaning trees? Most times we are setting up on the high side of leaners - this is going to put the back of your platform higher than the front, making it uncomfortable. I really like what you're doing here though - is there a way to add an adjustment bolt at the point where the bottom support contacts the tree? Or maybe you make it to where it angles forward on straight trees (most comfortable position I've found anyway), and is level on the high side of leaners?

What wall thickness are you using?

Running out of gas is the worst... and always happens when I'm about to try something cool (wish I had a TIG though)
 
@kyler1945 regarding leaning trees, I think keeping with a skeleton design instead of a full flat face platform top will allow for better foot positioning. The idea for a adding an adjustment bolt at the bottom contact is pretty neat, but I'm not sure if it would adversely affect stability. However implementing different ideas like that into a design is exactly the point of this thread!
 
Tying at the crossbar and having the rope go under the pedal does not do the trick?

on this other one, what about adding bars across? would that help you get around tree and also help on leaning trees?

On the top picture, I tied to that cross bar even before the wings were added, same result with the floating bottom anchor. For the second picture I changed some of the geometry.

This entire design phase has just been based off of pictures of the WE steps, I have never seen one or held one. Which adds to the learning curve of getting all the geometry right. So if there is anyone in Michigan that has a WE step and is willing to let me handle it, that would be greatly appreciated :)
