Thanks. It's a girl. I'm ecstatic and my only hope is she has her mother's curly hair. Her mother literally has been crying off and on because "She's gonna adore YOU but mothers and daughters always tie up as they get older."

Pregnancy hormones...man.
Congrats dude, as a father of three girls you will be admire and have big shoes to fill. I wouldn't change it for nothing.

As the father of an adult hunting daughter who's Mom is her best friend and confidant, I offer my sincerest Congratulations to both of you!

Kind of a similar topic, what would be the overall thoughts of a tracker (that could lodge itself in a deer) coming off of an arrow that you could see from your phone? Would that be a good/ethical alternative if it is possible?

It was not hunting ethics that kept it illigal. It was the fact that it was a controlled substance, and thought to be to dangerous to hunter in case of an accident. There were a few cases in Mississippi where hunters fell on an arrow and died, not from the broadhead damage, but from the effects of SCC.

To my knowledge, it is not considered a controlled substance. It may have been back then, but from what I can tell it is not today. Just requires a prescription.

This was my 21 yr old son's 8th grade science fair project. They created a somewhat functional blue tooth tracker that fit in an arrow, with obviously limited range but, it won him and his buddy a trip to the regional science fair.

I've thought about Bluetooth and gone over it with a few engineer buddies, but the range wouldn't be ideal (especially knowing you made a questionable shot). I'd imagine there has to be some newer technology akin to an Apple Airtag that could be used.

Pods are a moot point anyway. The drug used in them is a controlled substance and is illegal to possess without a license.
I do not believe it is a controlled substance. Let me know what/where you find different if you do not mind.

I wouldn't be opposed to it, and thought that at some point I'd seen a company pitch it.

For me, I think there'd be more value to a pod. Cheaper and much more likely to result in X amount of additional deer in the freezer after Y years of use.

Breadcrumb bluetooth noc is out there.
I’m waiting for poison darts to become legal so I can ditch that heavy bow!! Super minimalist, maybe save me a few pounds. My blow gun only weighs 5 ounces. Yes I’m kidding..

I took "I'll stick to relying on good shot placement" to imply that pods were supposed to let people off of that hook. My stance is that you should always strive for high-margin-of-error, high mortality shots. But as we all reassure each other when it's somebody we like who lost a blood trail, stuff happens. Pods make those hits more lethal.
I hadnt thought of that aspect but it could have some folks go down that thought process. Long story short, shooting into a deer versus putting directly into a vein, the onset of action is going to be extended if not non existent. Pods are gimmicky at best.

You can possess it with a prescription.
This is true, but does not make it a controlled substance.
In my mind, “controlled substance” has a negative perception in the public eye. If trying to convince folks that this is ok, I would want to remove the potential for that negative perception, especially if it’s not even true.

I was dealing with disposing quite a bit of this stuff for a hospital on Monday and had no idea it was the same chemical that was the topic of this discussion until you referenced that post. I had to do some digging on DEA/EPA regulations. It’s not considered “hazardous” either, but insulin is. Pretty wild.

I have never heard of a Pod until today. However, my only issue would be making sure it doesn't taint the meat for consumption. I would love to know for a fact that every deer I hit marginally would die. Also I bet more people would continue looking for wounded deer if they were using Pods. I know I have seen many hunters justify giving up on track jobs once they lost blood by assuming it wasn't a lethal hit and the deer will live.

I throw this around a few times as a joke, but honestly I wonder if at some point technology would allow this and it become an accepted tool. Micro fiber attached to arrow strong enough for big game. Similar to bow fishing. If the arrow somehow wrap around the deer, its not going anywhere. Even if it didnt, if broadhead hit the tree, the damage from deer trying to escape the wire would be devastating. Or if not fully penetrated, the damage cause by the arrow being violently pull out as the deer run away would be massive too.

Why not adopt this if we want to never lose a deer?

Neat idea for a science fair project, but I wouldn't be in favor of it being used. In general, I don't think it is a great idea to be putting traceable implants in wild animals. I don't see a problem with a tracker if the animal is going to eventually succumb to its wounds, but that cannot be guaranteed. If the animal lives, now it has a foreign body intentionally left inside of it. I know that is a possibility with any arrow, but the goal isn't to leave, forever, a foreign object inside of a deer. I would be worried about the long term possibility of infection.

I'd also be worried about the ability of someone to track an animal indefinitely. You have a bad shot on a deer, the deer runs off and has a decent chance at survival. Now, the deer is being pursued, day after day, because someone doesn't want their trophy buck of a lifetime to be killed by someone else. Or even worse, a deer is wounded and has an embedded tracker. Someone else kills the deer a day or two later. Now, you have a situation where someone can potentially track the deer to your front door and argue with you about it being theirs.

Another bad scenario would be someone going out and trying to tag deer to kill later. Who needs cameras (not to mention scouting) when you can just track deer on your phone all season long?
