Predator Platform broke on me last night

Ernie has addressed this issue multiple times. The only breaks that have occurred are the back wings. Even if both wings broke off, all you’d essentially be left with a diy lone wolf seat platform. The main structure is still in tact. Once again, I don’t care what platform you are using, you better practice proper rope safety and pretend that every time you step on a platform it or the strap holding it may break.

I'm sure when the Tethrd guys read this thread, they'll probably get something in the works for a recall.
I don't know if they will but the last time this was brought up I contacted them and was told they would not exchange until they broke.

I wouldn’t hold your breath. We (the forum) were breaking them like 12 hours after they shipped and nobody said boo. Just roll out a gen 2 and call it good. If I were someone with a gen 1 there is NO WAY I would feel comfortable at hunting height with one. I’d cam that sumbitch into next week at ground level until it broke and have them ship me a new one.

I’m no lawyer but I would imagine Tethrd as a company having known about this issue since day one and correcting said issue with another production run probably would have some sort of legal ramifications issuing a recall a year later. They would be “admitting fault” to some extent. Whereas now they can claim they were being used “improperly” by camming with toe hook method, and just send the customer a new platform. Either way I think it’s wrong but what do I know.

I'm going on my second season with a gen 1 without any problems....so far. Don't toe hook at all, but I do cringe every time I step onto it. Yes I'm tethred in first. Feels like Russian roulette.

I know the feeling. I was stepping on mine this afternoon and it felt too tight. Had to loosen it a little bit before stepping on it to get it all the way down.

The difference is that the only people using DIY lone wolf platforms were us on this board and we knew there was some assumed risk with it. The gen 1 predator was shipped to every YouTube hunting hype beast who had never even heard of a saddle before last Christmas. They don’t assume that same risk, whether perceived or actual. A mass produced product should not break under normal loads. Period.

But mass produced products do break. That is why treestands come with harnesses and safety instructions. That is why every product you buy from Tethrd, even the accessories, comes with a brochure full of safety warnings and instructions. I promise you someone who uses a product that you trust more than the gen1 will get hurt much quicker if they aren’t using proper rope safety than the person using proper rope safety with the gen 1 and one of those wings breaks off.

Those wings have the second set of teeth required for camming. A well-made LW seat platform has two sets of teeth as well. Get rid of half a set of teeth, and you’ve got yourself a balance issue.

I agree. Keep yourself tied to the tree just like anyone should with a climber, cheap lock on, expensive lock on, ring of steps, or platform. Understand the Gen 1 failures are a concern, but it’s been a year now since they fixed it and it’s not going to kill anyone who is safely climbing a tree.

What is toe hooking? Stepping on the platform to cam it over?

Step on the post with one foot and lift the end of the platform up with your other foot. You’ll feel it slide down a couple inches, then put your feet on top of the platform to cam it over. Makes the platform bite the tree really hard so it never will kick out even if you swing around the tree and put all your weight on one side.

Where the skys are so blue!
@catman529, OP and @kyler1954 have both broken Predators without toe hooking.

Hypothetical question: If a, say, Remington handgun goes off while on safe because the trigger is pulled, Remington designs a new one, and doesn't replace the defective product or even proactively notify consumers in any way...

Does culpability lay solely on the guy who had the gun go off in his holster? I mean, his finger shouldn't have been on the trigger! And after all, Remington will replace it for him if that happens. He'll probably be fine...

Solely on the gun owner.

Terrible example, Remington had a rifle with an issue. Engineer that designed it saw the flaw came up with a fix. Would have cost Remington less then .50 to retro it. The didn't do that and even kept making the rifle

This is not the place for Tethrd to communicate product information.

Agreed but I think it would be a worthwhile safety warning to the community that takes minimal effort by the forum admins/mods.

If not someone should start a new thread on the most efficient, safest way to break the platform to initiate the swap out for a gen 2.

I don’t want to break my gen 1 then have to wait on gen 2 because it’s back ordered. I would prefer to ship them my gen 1 when gen 2 is in stock.
