Rain

Do you guys hunt in the rain? Meaning not a torrential downpour, but steady bearable rain. More than a drizzle.

My available days to hunt this week have a high chance of rain all afternoon and early evening. I have a Milsurp camo poncho so not anxious from a gear perspective- more wondering if it could be a fruitful use of time and what shifts to my approach maybe needed. I know still hunting would be a real possibility; I’m also a bit wary of climbing one stick with rain on the tree/platform etc.

Any insights and experiences helpful!

I like hunting in the rain. Especially a light drizzle. All that dripping covers up any sound you may make. It also causes more movement in the leaves and such w/all the dripping on the leaves. The deer don't stay in because of a little rain......I don't like getting soaked either but I despise rain gear. I like sitting on the ground w/a light poncho to cover up and protect my gear.

If I'm in the woods and it starts to rain, I'm staying there unless its a downpour and I can't find suitable cover. If I check the weather and its going to be bad, then I just switch to Duck hunting. I never thought I'd be excited for bad weather, but here I am...

One consideration when it comes to hunting rain is drying out gear. Hunting all day in a soak, deep in the woods, where after hiking out you arrive at your truck/car at 8:30PM…and then having to dry out gloves, hat, outerwear, ropes, etc, for a hunt the next day…that can be a long night. Having a backup set of gear is nice, but that can be expensive.

I choose to hunting in the rain. There are many things to consider, but try to stack the odds in your favor. If you're gonna make it an actual point to do it, buy decent rain gear, period.

Yeah, I am not sure if I'd want to one-stick and saddle hunt in the rain - but I would just throw my poncho on if it started raining once up the tree probably?

Only out of one particular tree that has a natural umbrella, still-hunting or from a blind, when there is literally just a drizzle or steady pattering, and only when there is ZERO chance of thunder/lightning. Besides the fact that a blood trail could be washed away and my glasses don’t like me to shoot in the rain, that poor girl and her dad who got hit a few weeks ago has me thinking it’s really not so important to get a jump on a deer when storms are brewing. And climbing trees with wet sticks and ropes is kinda sketchy to me.
In a light or even steady rain you can definitely see good deer movement and sound dampening works both ways: deer can’t hear you as well but you can’t hear them either. I’ve had to stop climbing my tree in steady rain because deer have gotten mere feet from my tree before either of us realized the other was there.
