Rappelling setup

I get why he did that. But if you had a preset rope going up all the way and could clip into it. You wouldnt have to use a tether for limbs right? Maybe the first time to set the rope at its final place but if i leave paracord there i can just pull up my climbing rope, clip in and start one sticking right?

Sorry my page didnt refresh you already answered me

I thought oplux was supposed to be pretty tough against fraying. I bought some for my tether but i dont think my pocket is deep enough for a full setup anyways

I hunt public land and don't use preset lines. My plan is too either use 4 sticks with a moveable aider or single stick climb and rappel. May even rappel when four stick climbing.

So which is best for tether when single stick climbing?
Pretty subjective. HTP is hardy and therefore easily moved up a tree. It is my go to for a tether when one sticking. OpLux is supple, packs down SUPER-easy, and runs well when rappelling. It frays after repeated use on bark though.

What are your thoughts on this setup guys? 40ft of that rope woul be under 2 lbs i think...if i did my math right. View attachment 26836View attachment 26835
My thoughts...you are spending way to much on gear that isn't really needed. I single stick / rap down and only use a figure 8 ($10 amazon), carabiner ($10 amazon) and 35ft of 10mm rope ($0.95 a foot).

what do i have there that isnt needed besides extra rope. i wouldnt be opposed to using a figure 8 it just seemed like for an extra 20 bucks i had more options on the ats. im not going down any rope without a backup so i consider the hollowblock needed.
that rope i got is 150ft for 87 dollars. i can always use good rope.

You are in the right path. Practice a bunch at 5 feet.

Why do you feel there is a need for a back up safety device when rappelling 20-35ft?

I’m all about being safe and to each their own but backing up a rappel line seems kinda redundant to me I guess depending on what is being used. I mean once ya start to rap down, why would one need to stop / have a need for a backup is my thoughts.

I use a autoblock to back up my atc in case my hand slips. Also allows me to pause the rappel to gather steps.

You slip 20-35 ft and let me know how that feels for ya. its a 10 second task wrapping an extra prussik around your rappel line so you dont die. its 13 bucks... thhanks for your input but im gonna disagree.

If you are using a Petzl Verso or a Grivel Master Mono Belay device you would absolutely need a backup, but may not using a Madrock safeguard from what I have been learning?

With any device where I take my hand off the tail end of the rope I slide down uncontrolled, I would use a backup autoblock. If not, then I don't use any.

I searched and found Petzl did not test the GriGri for breaking strength they only tested at 100kG or 220lbs on a dynamic fall. When used to belay, the GriGri is only loaded to half the weight due to the pulley effect. I thought someone must have tested it to breaking but the closest I found was this video where the GriGri was loaded to 500 lbs and operated normally. I feel better now. I would like to see someone do this to a Safeguard but I suspect it would be similar.

I have 40' of 8mm oplux, a madrock safeguard, and a spare biner in an Eastern Outdoors fleece pouch. It packs very tight and is under 2lbs.
I have the exact same set up thanks to you Landon...I have been practicing with it about 3 times a week...thanks for all the time and help you gave me...ura good man Ihold450
