Rappelling Video

Question for you guys:

Do you back up your Safeguard with an autoblock of some sort or just rely on the device?

While on stand I make a backup loop I run back into my carabiner.
Once on rapell I do not back it up other than my blade hand for control.
I guess it would not hurt to back it up.

I've done both. Personally I found I descended more smoothly and made better use of my brake hand when I used an autoblock.

Personally I see running a rappel device with no backup as significantly higher risk that running a single tether. If I were running 2 tethers, I couldn't imagine rappelling without an autoblock.

No. My ascender is attached to the climbing line with a sling going to my bridge carabiner for backup.

I back mine up with a distel hitch on my right side. Oplux with TRC 6mm rope.

I put a stopper knot when I’m at hunting height (I always climb with a 30’ tether no matter if doing stick or SRT or self climber platform).

As for a backup when rappelling, there’s no reason to put a “third hand” on your setup. This is where you are rappelling with a figure 8 or a caribiner and if you let go you’d fall. With a Grigri or Safeguard if you let go you will stop.

If you want redundancy in case the Safeguard or caribiner were to somehow snap then you could do prusik or similar loop from your bridge to the rope but you’d want that above the safeguard and then you would need to hold it with one hand while operating the safeguard with the other.
