I’m new to saddle hunting. I like reading and experimenting with new methods. I have read not to use Amsteel for rappelling. Most have said it’s because the friction hitch doesn’t hold well. Today I was messing around with it at ground level of course. Or should i say chair level. I had the 1/4 inch Amsteel doubled and could not get my Prusik knot to slip. It’s also running through a figure 8. Is this the only danger?

Why use a rope that far out of manufacturer's specs and risk life and limb when there are ropes specifically designed for the purpose available for the same price?

Amsteel has a low melting point. You start putting a little consistent friction on it and its going to melt. Might get a rappel or 2 out of it.

Thanks. Figured there must be a good reason. Who wouldn’t like the light weight and high strength.
