Repelling down

I am looking to maybe repel down from the tree but don’t know what I would need to do so. Any advise on equipment and suggestions for repelling?

@DanO

I'd do oplux, 30', figure 8 knot on a bite girth hitched around a tree. And expensive but safe and easy is the madrock safeguard or gri gri. But I go with a black diamond figure 8, most folks attach a prussic to keep it safer.

I was thinking about the figure 8, it does okay for you?

I love the figure 8, I use it in a slightly dangerous way, in that if there is not weight on it, you can pop off and drop to your doom/dismay/death, but if you keep it loaded with weight it will keep you at the same level without action. Progress capture. If you use a figure 8 as intended with a prussic knot, it's safe and easy. Highly reccomended.

Are you referring to auto-stop mode referenced in the below URL?

I came to saddle hunting with rock climbing experience and use the same rappel method for trees: Black diamond ATC with a prusik backup. You simply run the rope over large enough branch and run both sides of the rope through the ATC, connected two your bridge. Pretty easy setup and easy rope retrieval. You of course need twice the rope length of your climbing height. Definitely a cheap option at like 15 dollars.

I tried different methods last year and settled on a Madrock Safeguard but. Grigri would work too.

The main reason was I hated having to transition to rappel equipment up in the tree, in the dark and cold. I climb, hang, and rappel down attached to my Safeguard.

I also should mention that I carry a single 30’ piece of rope for SRT/Single Stick that I use for my primary tether as well. I also carry a 10’ rope that acts as a lineman or a backup tether. Occasionally I get part way up and have to go around something or at the top the hang position on my 30’ isn’t great so I ADD my 10’ tether in a better spot but stay attached to my 30’ with slack.
