Rifle guys

Yeah, but reversal if it's not reliable would be a project, to say the least lol.

They did sell this rifle in an 18” 30-06 carbine model I believe. It would be interesting to know if there were some differences to account for variation of pressure for proper cycling. It’s quite possible there’s no difference. Unfortunately big R is defunct.

the gas port needs to be opened up from .063 to .080

I wouldn't.
First reason: I'd be concerned about reliability - as per @Tim0712 you'd have to open up the gas port, and then figure out timing and reliability. Second reason: they're not making any more of these and if you booger it up you'd have to re-barrel it, which would mean rolling the dice on a (probably used) replacement barrel from Numrich or eBay, assuming you can find one.

As far as that goes, it would probably be smarter to have your 'smith re-barrel your gun with an actual carbine barrel, and hold on to the original barrel, instead of chopping it. You could probably find a carbine barrel in .35 Whelan, as far as that goes. It might be cheaper to find another auto carbine.

For what you'd spend chopping this rifle you could get a used levergun in .30-30, .444, .45-70, .44Mag, .45LC, .35Rem, .32SPL, .38-55WIN, or whatever. Or a used bolt gun in 35 Whelan, .358Win, .338Fed, .308, etc.

Really, 4" of extra barrel isn't going to make all that much difference in handling in the field, and if you're hunting in cover so close you can't handle a rifle, you should probably sling it and switch to a handgun.

I appreciate the opinions here although that is not what I was looking for. Maybe I should have been less vague in the original post. I already had a woodmaster it 06 cut down to a carbine. Unfortunately life happened and I sold it but I have re acquired one for short money and would like to reproduce one of my favorite long lost rifles. Probably should have elaborated here a little more in the fact that in an avid gun collector who finds interest in archery not the other way around. Unfortunately the guy the cut and crowned my last one has since passed and I don’t like trusting just anyone doing my work. I have full access to a Bridgeport so modifying the gas delivery is short work on my end I just want someone reputable to cut the barrel. I have numbers of guns I’m not buying anything else. Again my question here was any one having experience with someone local to me or someone elsewhere reputable. You guys saying “just buy a carbine” clearly don’t know the market

Yes, you’ve gotta be careful and very specific around here. We’re a fairly chatty community and we live to share our experiences to try and help a guy out. BTW my father in Law picked up a new savage axis at Bass Pro for $299 out the door on Black Friday. It had a weaver scope on it. There are some deals to be had. I get wanting to replicate the one you let go however.
