ruger 10/22 for truck camper shell camping self defense

I remember hearing of an officer in Detroit, many years ago, unloading her 9 mm into a very large man inside of an apartment as he charged at her. The man caught several of her rounds, but still got his hands on and beat her to death before he bled out.
A big dude, or a meth head, might not go down at all with a .22...
But chances are the first one that hits him is going to have him running in the opposite direction.

Besides that though, maybe it's just mine...but my 10-22 likes to hang up at least once per magazine. Just not the kind of design I would want to chance my life with. It's not the end of the world if it doesn't go bang when aiming at a squirrel, but with someone coming in on you it's a whole different story.

A lot of good points here, all valid I'd say. I think a 10/22 is a pretty good choice overall, relatively quiet but Its still gonna be extremely loud, and versatile. I agree a pistol is a better choice in a lot of ways but you really only need to shoot one way, probably towards your feet/ over the tailgate so a long gun is less of an issue. I like the 25 rd mags, fun to have and I bet in 25 shots you're hitting something important, at least enough to get your 45 if needed. Since you're planning for the very unlikely, in my opinion the 10/22 is a great survival weapon.

For future consideration won't any silencer work with any .22 caliber? I'm thinking .22lr ( .224 if i recall) and .223. just saying.

“primary defense gun sleeping in the truck”……”I'll have my 45 nearby in case needed”…..

Really? Just say “I want to buy another gun”.

If you are going that route, look at the ruger charger 10/22. Pistol variant of the rifle, takes all of the 15, 25, 40, 50, and 100 round magazines the rifle takes. Throw on a collapsible brace and it’s a much more compact package. Buy the pistol takedown version, even better yet. Add a Franklin arms binary trigger and a form 1 suppressor and have loads of fun. Quietbore form 1. Red dot of your choice. Get an AGP arms folding stock, where the suppressor fits into the stock, and that’s a nice package. $2500 later and you are all set.

Check out “22 plinksters” videos on YouTube to interpret the description above. Lol. Have fun!

Get subsonic ammo (cci standard) 1040 fps, makes a lot of difference, just pop and no zing. Put a muffler on it and problem solved.

I don't think a paid-for 10/22 in a truck bed is a bad thing. It'll probably be about as quiet as a suppressed 45, and cheaper.

At the end of the day, 999 times out of a thousand self defense guns are adult security blankets. When stuff happens it's a crapshoot how it shakes out. OP isn't asking for advice on a new gun, he's asking for thoughts on the one he has.

@raisins, like I've said, my anti-methhead gun is a .22lr. It makes me (and more importantly, my wife) sleep better in the boonies. I know I can hit with it because ive put thousands of rounds through it over 8 years. I know it statistically is less likely to stop a methhead than another larger round. I also know it beats empty hands.

I'd say for pragmatic advice, make sure you shoot it enough that you can clear a dud instinctively. Rimfire has more duds than centerfire in my experience. Also, I try to get the most velocity I can out of mine. I know .22wmr is pretty effective with hogs on a body-shot, and it's relying on velocity to do that.

Almost any suppressor will work, just make sure it’s user serviceable because.22 are dirty rounds and the threads are the correct size.

In this scenario the people breaking in to the car to steal stuff are going to discover you’re inside and continue to break in and do you harm? I get it, anything can happen with crazy folks and druggies but I think you’d probably get into trouble if you were sleeping in your car and someone tried to break in and you just shot them. I bet they’d be half as scared as you once they found out there was a person sleeping in the truck they wanted to steal from. I bet people break into cars because they figure it’s an easy target, break the window, grab the stuff and go, Like how far are you letting them in the camper shell before you blast them? This is actually an interesting scenario.

Then I see something this. Granted they were on their property but it says they were in there car. 607D722A-4F52-4746-866B-D7A1F6CF62E5.png

@Weldabeast that comedy bit you posted had me in stitches! I love that he “extends an olive branch” to the “gun guys” after promoting the use of a .22 for self defense, admitting that it’s “just a roided-up BB gun!” but he has a point that even a BB-gun will make a a perp have to “regroup outside” …

So if hearing protection is your main concern @raisins, why not use a CO2-powered semi-automatic BB pistol. I don’t think the perp will stick around if they’re taking a volley of BB’s in the face!

That, or use bear spray like @GeoFish suggested. Either one gives you time to fetch your .45 and exit the truck while they try to shake it off and regroup outside.

I’d pick a Ruger Charger with a suppressor over a 10/22 with no can. Same action, same overall length, but one is whisper quiet. You could also add a binary trigger to make it darn near full auto. A better option, though, is pepper spray for close quarters (and bears) and then turn to a .45, AR pistol, .300 BLK or something like that.

I won't do anything stupid. I plan to order a suction cup hang tag (or make one) for the back glass that says something like

Armed, Sleeping Bowhunter
Leave in Peace

If they try to get in after that and a verbal warning, then I'll do what is required to protect my life.

As far as folks saying this is a super low probability event (being messed with while out hunting), it must be nice living in Mayberry :)

2 years ago I was surrounded by a father and son that were told by their wife/mother that I was trespassing on their land (I wasn't). I was alone at night in the middle of nowhere with 2 angry rednecks circling me. Them seeing my chest holster was what made them leave.
