Saddle upgrade, rappelling stuff

Just tried having the prussik on the lineman’s loop. I like it even better. Will be doing it this way for sure.

The main advantage of putting it there is it’s further away from the ATC and less chance of it getting caught in the device leaving you hanging.

In that case I would pull out a backup prusik loop and caribiner and attach myself to the rope above the ATC. Then I would foot lock the rope and stand while pushing the prusik up so I could hang on it and take all the weight off the ATC to fix it.

One thing I noticed in your pic is that it looks like the atc is in low friction mode. If you find yourself slipping, turn it around so the "teeth" inside are facing down and bighting on the tag end.
Edit: looks like you've tried it both ways in different pics.

Have you tried it having the prussic above the ATC? Mitigate the possibility of it getting up in the ATC.

Makes sense. That sounds like a good way to fix that issue. Thanks for the tip.

Yep you got it. Tried both ways. Pretty cool there’s 2 different modes in that little device.

I initially started with the prussik backup above the ATC like you said. I was told that it works better when it’s below on the side like that so that it’s easier to start and stop. I agree it’s easier like that but I originally had it above the ATC as a safety thing. Maybe it would be worth adding another prussik above the ATC for safety and keeping the current prussik below where it is now? Maybe that’s overkill and would be hard to manage all that. Just thinking out loud.

I’d just have the one below and leave it at that.

That's what I do. Overkill? That's a personal decision. I keep the main prusik loosely connected above the atc, connected to my bridge while rappelling down. Just make sure not to wrap your hand around it while rappelling because your natural instinct is to grab it if you start falling which renders useless. I keep my left hand just above it and right hand on the autoblock.

We used to rappel in the army with a Swiss basket “harness” (take a piece of rope and wrap it around your crotch) and a caribiner usually with a fireman’s belay.

Maybe that’s why I’m not worried about rappelling on my Madrock Safeguard without anything else. YOLO! ;-)

Seriously though, good on everyone who adds a third hand on an open rappel device like an ATC! I’ve done it myself numerous times, even with someone on belay below me.

Makes sense. I might try both ways and see how it goes.

Make sure you feel comfortable just sitting in the saddle for long periods hanging from your tether. Having the saddle slip up your butt while you are hanging is no fun and there is nothing to stand on to pull it down until you get your stick set again. Here is my preferred saddle height on my butt/upper leg.

Good gawd man do you take all that up in the tree with you!? I couldn’t imagine the headache of trying to keep all that quite haha

Decided to redo the bridge again on my saddle with the AmSteel bridge that H2 now provides for their saddle. I like this one much more and feel a lot safer with it. Not that there was anything wrong with the custom AmSteel bridge. I think it was just me not being good at working with the stuff. I ended up just making it work the best I could. With this bridge there was no splicing or feeding of the rope through itself. Real simple and no tools required. Heath is awesome at providing directions and explaining how to do this.

Have you tried shooting your bow yet with that bridge? I found when having a longer bridge it would block me from being able to make some shots do to my draw string hitting it. If I remember correctly, my bridge is now only 18” total.

I have not tried shooting with it yet. I’ll have to do that and see how it is. I would think just adjusting the length of it would solve that wouldn’t it?
