You have a golden opportunity to make the landowner's property better as well as increase the deer usage. And, I'm not talking about planting food, baiting, or destroying the aesthetics of the property. In that area, I know what we think of as thick and what deer want as thick are two different things sometimes. The midstory being thick doesn't set that property apart from the others in the area, and it doesn't give the food and ground cover they want. It makes it hard to hunt also because when you get up very high, you can't see much either. What I would do is appeal to the landowner's property value side and tell them you could make it better by doing native habitat restoration. It really is enjoyable work and doesn't take much on that small of a property. Louisiana has private biologists that work with LDWF that will come out there and explain to you and the landowner how to do that in a way that is wildlife friendly but also restoring a more native ecosystem. You would benefit as well as the landowner. For your area, they work out of the Hammond office and can be reached at 985-543-4777.
