I’d get the 13.5”
Thanks man . I just tried it with some of the prusik cord that came on a lineman's belt. Works so awesome! I'm going to pick up one of those Sterling hollow blocks for sure! Great recommendation

Any ole' accessory cord will do assuming it's the right size. The hollow block is great though. much easier to manage. Good luck and stay safe!

Would you mind posting a couple pics of your autoblock setup. Thanks in advance.

Using the same 13.5” autoblock, that thing is awesome. Up with the Safeguard but down via autoblock and ATC, it’s a much smoother descent.

Guys keep your auto block a ways away from your belay device! If the hitch jams up next to or in it - one of two things is gonna happen. You’ll either get stuck and have real difficulty getting it loose(not likely) or it will jam up against it and you will he flying to the ground with no way to stop!

I’d keep at least 8-10” between the two devices when your brake line is tight.

They call it extended belay - you want your belay about face height for rappel - unlike when you’re climbing up on SRT where you want the device closer to your waist to get a longer stroke each time you step up. This is when it’s good to have an adjustable bridge or two bridges. A 30cm climbing sling works great as a short bridge, weighs nothing, and packs easy.

Most of your normal bridge lengths will keep the belay device far enough from your auto block. But in the picture above it’s too close for comfort!

Totally. Good advice here. Gotta keep 'em separated! My picture is deceiving.

@weekender21 , a couple of questions.
1. What belay device is this and what is the white cable (red arrow in pic below)
2. this is the sterling hollow block 13.5" attached to your tag end, correct? (purple arrows below)

Atc sport belay device. White loop is steel cable it’s how it attaches to biner.

Yes sterling hollow block in auto block configuration.

I'm sorry this might be a silly question, but all of this is new to me. So in the setup pictured, there is no sort of grigri, safeguard/lifeguard type of device that would be activated to descend the tree. Instead an "ATC Sport belay device" is used to guide the rope and attach the rope to the saddle's bridge. The action of lowering oneself is the responsibility of the autoblock? Am I on the right track here?

The atc sport is a belay device. It just doesn’t have built in progress capture like the other devices you mentioned. Some quick searches YouTube for atc sport and rappelling wil give you the best info.

It’s got a v groove on one side. The harder you pull on your brake strand, the harder it bites into the v, slowing and stopping you. Loosen tension, and it begins feeding through the device again. If you want progress capture(only on the way down) (you want to stop for an extended period of time) the auto block will stop you. But you should tie off if you intend on being there a while to work or hang. Auto block just stops you, not intended to keep you.

So, essentially I wouldn't need to use my Safeguard, simply use the ATC device in combination with an autoblock, correct?

I believe you are correct, however, I believe you will need the Safeguard for ascending. Others can chime in.

Seems like most ATCs are made for double rope. Will these work fine for single rope descents or should I look for single rope ATC? Thanks
