With Cranford going out of business and selling out of inventory, I thought I'd see if anyone was still using this method or had tried and moved away. I have Cranford rope steps, and I had made an amsteel daisy chain with webbing footloop, but never really got around to using it much.

I did. I found that the aider being long makes a kick out more likely. I really wanted it to work. But on a tree with a lean it was sketchy. If the step moves, the aider moves. Just because it did not work well for me dosent mean you should not give it a try.

Did you try it?
Maybe you can teach me something if it works for you.

Not yet. I will when I have enough time to give it a fair shot. I just can't see how it's much different than kick out possibilities with 2TC. But, with this, you're not having to move tethers up and down. I use the steps as is without an aider, and I can get them stable.

I have done it with bolts and it works very well. Tried it with steps and it wasn’t as steady. I like 2TC better than either, though.

I am looking at this again. If I can find a solid strap on step and I climb with my tether and linesman this should work on most straight trees. I have tried just about every step on the market, Cranford, Pioneer, Squirrel, Treehopper and Apex. All were tried with Daisy Chain/ Truckers hitch and tree step strap. The Treehopper worked OK, all the others hinged making the steps unstable. When I tried the Apex steps and a daisy chain/truckers hitch the steps were not tight enough.
But the Apex with a tree step strap work the best. The problem is threading the long strap through the buckle and attaching the steps with gloves on.
I have a possible solution comming. CGM is making me some straps using the AustriAlpin frame buckles. I hope they get the steps as tight as the strap and buckle. They will be quick attach and weigh less then the buckle. They will look something like this.

Should be quicker, attach with gloves and and save some weight.

I have not gotten my straps yet, mix up in shipping.
I have tried this climbing method again and its not for me.
The aider must be 3 times your step distance, so for 16" your aider is 48" long. For me the longer the aider the more sensitive it is on a tree with a little lean. Also since you install the steps directly above each other it is not as stable as a offset aider, such as used on sticks.
