Slummin' it in a Kestrel

Great video, Nutterbuster. I too will be sticking with the kestrel this year - I think it's a great saddle and does everything I want so no reason to change.

Loved the "Papa Squirrel" reference, too!

For those not in the know who are watching this and thinking, "I want an awesome, lightweight buckle to lock my ameristeps tighter than Ft. Knox, but the silly hillbilly mumbled his way through the information I needed," papasquirrel (aka pinksquirrel, aka Fearless Leader, aka Boss Hog, aka @redsquirrel) has a handy sticky (heh, heh) under the "Climbing methods and platforms" sub-forum.

The buckle he recommends is dope.

I’m pretty sure Larry the cable guy stole nutterbusters accent.
Hurr hurr!

Yes, actually. With the amsteel bridge there was a "hump" that was catching when the bridge slid through the carabiner. (Edit: this was due to the buried ends of the splice) Nothing major, but it irked me.

If you make a good taper on the ends of the amsteel bury, you won’t feel that hump. You can even make the tapered ends from each side over lap each other in the center of the bridge for best results but it’s hard to do. Trying to over lap them, I seem to always get a few straggler strands of the bury sticking out of the outer amsteel, but it’s just cosmetic.

Yeah, I tried, but I probably didn't cut the amsteel at a sharp enough angle to taper well. I may give it a second shot at some point, but I'm pretty happy with the webbing.

To me the biggest thing is a FIXED bridge. Heck with having any more carabiners than necessary.

Cutting at an angle might not be good enough. You have to pull threads and trim. I liked my webbing bridge also but went to the amsteel. I carabiner mine on because I don’t like it in my way while climbing. Might just need to get use to it being tucked in once I get my mantis.

I'll keep that in mind. Honestly there's not a whole lotta difference between the two options in my book. Webbing is simpler, which in my book is a pretty big plus.

I hear you on the bridge getting in the way. I felt that way at first. If you keep the tuck wide, it doesn't hang down as bad. I can climb with stepps, spurs, or bolts no problem. When you get to the top just whip it out and clip in!
