Social Media

I listened to the podcast and I don't think Matt fundamentally made his case. Dubious estimates aside, he never gave a reason why horns, hide, and meat are intrinsically purer motivations.

I mean you can find meat hunters who think trophy hunting for big antlers is distasteful.

I do think there were some interesting topics that were touched on tangentially. For instance the growing prevalence of leasing ground pricing out some hunters.

I'm not good at putting all my thoughts into words but I've thought about this off and on all season. There's a lot of negatives with social media and hunting.

I've got a close friend that has never shot a buck of any size passed on a mature 130 class buck with his bow here this year because of social media standards. Just about more than I can handle...

I know this is a completely selfish reason but the out of state pressure on our public here is just becoming insane because of social media.

I'm truly happy with the standards I set for myself this year and how my season turned out. But if I spend a while on social media that contentment gets a lot harder to find. It's so easy to want to shoot something to share instead for your own personal goal. Trophy hunting is a journey to enjoy not just to achieve for personal fame or recognition.

130” deer! Whew my biggest is that and I’d take that every season of my life. Wow passed a 130 still insane to me

My wife has a FB account to keep in touch with family and friends. I never look at it or post anything on it. This is the only site in which I actively engage. There is too much judgement and what happened to privacy? I can't be bothered with those SM sites. My kids are always saying "Dad you need to get on Instagram or Tapatalk." I just give them the "look." I did tell them the CCP developed Tapatalk to spy on Americans to learn our lifestyle and language and customs even more to emulate us and take us over. Call me a heretic but I will not forget Mike Pompeo stating that the CCP uses TapaTalk to spy on America and Americans. Everyone laughs and thinks you're a McCarthy era paranoid commy hunter. I say call me what you will. Anyway, I really appreciate this site but I also wondered about these new GPS apps coming out.... all of my waypoints and notes..... maybe others are buying this data.... I'll drop it in a second.

I generally consider social media a tool. In and of itself, it isn't intrinsically good or bad. It all depends on how you use it and the corresponding effect on you and your life.

I have sold a lot of farm equipment on FB. Good tool

Matt doesn't want new hunters and seems to only be concerned with the fact he has less area to hunt to himself. I also think he is drastically overestimating the number of people in the woods hunting for the wrong reasons. He said in the podcast that he estimates 25% of hunters (and he said it could be more) are hunting solely to increase their social media following. I think that number is laughably high but, at least he admits he has no idea what the true number is or how he came to that conclusion.
.

The attitude of ownership of public land is a problem. I have had hunts purposefully interrupted by the same guy on public land. He thinks that 250 acres are his and he has hunted there for years . I am a fairly new hunter - 6 years and on social media I never claim to be a great hunter - I have tried a lot of saddle hunting ideas though for fun.
The idea that new hunters are a problem on public land is not always or maybe even generally true.
Killing animal is not always the point in hunting. Exercise and enjoying the outdoors is part of it. And long time hunters often have a bad attitude of possessiveness too

It's probably funny but I 100% agree. While this site has got sucked into a lot of what is posted in that article by it's sheer size I started this site because I wanted a community of like minded hunters. I hate social media and I hate that this site is now considered part of it.
I hear ya...This social media/ internet world BS is a very sharp double edged sword.

Yeah it's terrible. Several years back I was like, you know what, I like to write, I am going to start writing about outdoor stuff as a side gig. Maybe fund my hunting a little bit or get some free stuff. Well the first couple gigs I got, just dabbling and finding my voice, but I had to promote my articles on social media, a certain number of posts for each article. I kept that up for like 2 or 3 months before I was like Efff this. I was not into that part chasing likes and all the stupid hashtags. I know a couple D-list influencers, they are so freaking fake it's ridiculous.
I Agree.
I have gotten alot of flack about alot of things i say because to be honest people dont like the truth especially if its bad and misleading coming from someone they look up to.
I also know quite a few A list influencers that are also fake as hell.
Ive witnessed and was told few times
“SHHHH keep that under your hat”
Some Hide alot of details and dont always tell the whole story of where they are hunting.
I brought this up several times on several different forums and actually made a video about it on my vlog channel.
also took slot of crap over it especially from one of the big influencers and-some fanboys.
The problem with this social media **** is.
everyone is an expert or a one upper.
noone wants to be outdone and it drives some people nuts to see someone else successfull.
Then you have cliques and team choices lol.
If you choose one team your looked down on by the other.
(example)
the hunting beast and lone wolf custom gear.
all over legal issues between two guys that noone else has anything to do with.
its really ridiculous.
Im fans of both but i really dont watch or read much from either one anymore.
most of the info nowadays is regurgitated stuff i know, to get likes, and to gather a bigger following or some sort of product.
it was actually called years ago the jab jab punch marketing ploy.
Me I like to talk about, compare, learn, and anything else thats gonna make me learn more.
Especially hunters from different areas.
I do videos and posts to get information out to people that i am interested in, experience, or want people to know.
i have a pretty good face book following and group but in the near future im really pondering on shutting it down and just do youtube, rumble snd some tik tok.
Ya gotta sort through the idiots snd just move on. The trolls will troll and it is what it is
Here is a more polite version of a video i did a few years back lol.

I listened to part of the Meateater episode on the way home. I'm only part of the way through the Steve/Matt argument but what a load of BS. While I agree that there are some negative side effects of social media on hunting. I can't agree with Matt when his entire premise is simply that social media increases the number of hunters in the woods and "he" doesn't want more hunters because it's too crowded. When your argument is based entirely on selfishness, I can't get on board.

I know of a lot of new hunters on this forum, I've seen how excited they are when they are retelling their story on this site and can see how proud they are of their accomplishments in the pics they post. For Matt to want to take that away from new hunters simply because he wants more area to himself shows how much he sucks.

He also has zero self awareness when he is yelling "who are you to decide we need more hunters" at Steve. Well, Matt. Who are you to decide we don't?

And this is coming from a 40 yr old who doesn't have any social media accounts (beside this forum) and has somewhat tongue in cheek told several people that social media might cause the end of society. But you know what what hurts society even more? Selfishness. Which is on full display by Matt in that episode.

The other side of the coin: in many areas bucks are getting more age than before due to regulations and social pressure to only shoot deer of "trophy" size, which is all fallout from the hunting marketing boom and perpetuated by social media. Likely, fewer hunters in many areas contributes as well, while so many youth pass on field sports to video game or friend network or whatever.

I'm not going to listen to the podcast, but that sould be part of the conversation.

I've see this in Musky fishing, but worse, and it's unfortunate imo. In an area I grew up fishing, there's only a few fish that make legal measurements now that they've been stretched to ridiculous limits that were pushed by Musky associations. Likewise, there's only a few fishing them nowadays...mostly those who plugged that "trophy" agenda.

Wanting bigger game for personal goals should be a matter of habitat improvement and hunting better, not shaming others and selfish politicking.

I do not think it is all social media. Much of it is just the instant access to information, any kind of information. Guys are not going to take as many "road trips" without all that mapping and direction Intel. It took our ancestors sometimes years to find new areas. You can do it in minutes now.

No more paper road maps, long distance dialing conservation officers, etc. It's all so easy now.

This has alot to do with it .GPS has given access to people who don't have a sense of direction, and would never make it to these locations without one.i was shown the wilderness by my elders and know where I'm at even when I'm lost,I don't have on x yet.but I work out of town during season some times and scout Google earth before I get there.i find locals honey holes.if they hate it they should have woke up earlier. Or put in work to have backup plans.just lazy if you ask me.fare chase on public I don't cry when I see 5 trucks at the gate and I'm late ,I just go down in the thick where they won't ,and meet them at the gate with my little buck

DANG! I learned to hunt from my Stepdad. He was an outdoorsman. We fished, trapped, hunted small game and deer. We all learned to hunt from someone. He was good at what he did in the woods. I never wanted to be him, it was also in a time when "instant everything" didn't exist, so I guess I'm lucky there. I don't go on social media except this site. Red this isn't social media by a long shot. This is the most respectful site on the web(so I'm told). Guys on here will drive to your house to share gear or knowledge to make sure another member isn't lacking for anything.
I think it's ok that we share our methods and gear selection choices on here. No one is saying do this or you suck. Hunting is a personal journey. I don't want to be someone else when I grow up I just want to be the best ME I can be. I don't relinquish who I am because someone has a better idea on how to climb more efficiently, or where and how to hunt. I maintain my free will. I'm in control over what I take on. I don't even know why someone would give so much power to someone they don't even know(social media influencer)? Why are we so concerned why other people do what they do and what does it matter to anyone else anyway? Who am I to judge what anyone else is doing, and what their motivations are. I barely have enough time and energy to mind and take care of my own business. We all have opinions, mine are unique to me. As a wise old owl (my Mom) says,"I'll tell you what I know, not what to do". Social media is bad if we make it bad. If someone advertises a product that you like and you think it will make your life easier get it. But if your buying it because you think it somehow makes you better than, or cooler than... then that's on you. If your to weak to think for yourself, well that's on you too. KIS keep it simple.

I’ve always said social media is the devil. I am a GON forum member and just recently this one and that’s it. I too am in the camp of I don’t care what others think. Sure I have all the accounts, but almost never log in or even look. I like sitting around the campfire with y’all too! I got on here to learn this saddle thing and I got a long way to go.
