@g2outdoors, @Erniepower and other splicing experts, What kind of string/rope/thread do I need for lock stitching? In G2's splicing video he used zing it, I found some dyneema 1.75mm stuff at DuctchWearGear, is that what you used? Don't wanna get the wrong thing. Attached is a screen shot, they have a 2.2mm as well.zing it and lash it.JPG

One other question on fids. If I make one from a crochet needle what diameter do I need? Is it 10? I am not having luck threading it back thru with 8mm - the tag end isn’t fitting. I just want to be sure if I size up I can still fit it through. Or do I just order real fids?

Go to Walmart and buy the aluminum knitting needles. Get 3 or 4 sizes. They're cheap. Cut them at an angle and you'll have a great fid.

I've used Zing-it, 300lb braided fishing line, and paracord interior line. The lock stitch thread isn't all that important. It only holds the tail in place and allows the hollow braid to do the work.

Also check if you have a local Ace Hardware store - I was in there and saw a package of 3 plastic fids near the rope section for $1.60 or so

Let me know if you find it, I feel like all Ace Hardware stores are completely different animals, never know what you will find. I've got one not that far away, guess I could call them, lol.

Spliced some the other night with chopsticks and scotch tape. Pain in the behind and sloooow but it worked. If those plastic fids are legit its a great deal. Similarly I could call the local Ace but for some weird reason Id rather drive up and look for myself. Maybe its my subconscious addicted to their fastener section. It’s unrivaled.

I bought some of the plastic ones, I suggest making sure there are no burrs on the points. Mine did and it will catch on some of the finer stranded braid. I ended up just buying the knitting needles from wal mart along with a loop turner and some small razor sharp fiskar brand scissors.

I have the Samson fid pack too. They're the best to use, but expensive. And some of the aluminum knitting needles are too small.

@Erniepower may be able to post a pic of some of his splicing fid creations. He's a wiz at that stuff.
