Curious as to each persons rappelling device of choice. I have just received all these methods and have started to practice. What do you think is easier/safer? I am favoring the Grivel right now but still getting acclimated to all three methods. Do you guys auto block with the Safeguard?

1) Mad Rock Safeguard
2) Grivel 2 x 8
3) Pezel ATC

Madrock SafeGaurd. I use an autoblock but not necessary.

Just because you said SRT and you would of already needed a mechanical device probably. If just rappelling then yes grivel 2x8 is my choice.

Safeguard for ascending but I prefer an ATC (Black Diamond Sport) for rappelling. I use an autoblock to backup every device I use to rappel.

i like my safeguard, I ascend with it, i autoblock back it up and tie a stopper while hanging, but when rappelling I dont use a autoblock. its everything i need in a single device, thats what i like about it. I use it for practicing srt and 1 sticking

Safeguard for SRT, figure 8 with auto block (unless I don’t have to stop) for rappel, because it just feels smoother than the other 2.

I prefer to rappel on the Grivel Master Mono Belay, but I use the Mad Rock safeguard the most. I SRT climb, so I use the Safeguard the most. I have the Master Mono as a backup in my pack.

I use a GriGri2 and I'm happy with it.

4) Figure 8 descender

This thread is useless without a poll! :sunglasses:

1) MadRock Safeguard for one-sticking and rappelling. No autoblock these days but it is recommended (HollowBlock or Jammy).

Would you want to sell that Grivel Master Mono?

GriGri Plus
I just got one of those. I just used it twice in the backyard to try it out.

According to the manual, you're not supposed to let go of the rope when descending. However, I suspect a lot of do.

Does the manual say ascending or belaying?
I have grigri2, lifeguard, safeguard and birdie. They all work about the same for rappelling. No autoblock.

I let go of the tag line, but before I do I tie a Safety stop knot so it only can release and drop a few inches.

Safeguard here for SRT, both ascending and descending, no autobloc. I did just pick up a Grivel Master Mono for possible use for rappelling (with an autobloc).

I tie a stopper knot or a clove hitch and carabiner it to my lineman's loop as a "backup". Another trick I learned on here is to use a clove hitch with a carabiner instead of a stopper knot. Keep in mind......this may be overkill to a certain degree. But, I'm a chicken and I tie off whenever I can!

Be safe and have fun!

I should add to above: Very few people can tell you how to do it right.........but, almost everyone can tell you how not to do it wrong. There is a big difference! LOL
