St Vincent Island

I couldn't make this 1 this year even if I wanted to because of family junk....if I didn't have to do that stuff I would secretly apply for the same hunt and then proceed to wait for ur updates true stalker style and then show up to the boat launch without ur knowledge and then after u launch, scurry onboard and be a stowaway and then update SH live from the saddle 2021 with a pic of ur camp.....jk..haha....but my overactive imagination thinks that's hilarious and a wonderful idea.....
Please take some pics and do a write up here on SH if u end up going on that hunt
My wife and I just got the permit for white tail on St Vincent. I’ll be there for archery Florida/Georgia weekend

On the whitetail quotas are u allowed hogs also?
It didn’t say. I might have to call and ask about that one. I just know we are gonna try to take a trip out there this month and bike the trails, scout some sign ect…. And during the hunt we are planning on hammock camping instead of driving the boat back and forth and staying at a hotel

You can shoot hogs, you can even shoot raccoons.

So, when I was there at least, if you kill ANYTHING, even a 3 pound baby pig, they will send a truck and pick you and your game up and give you a ride back. Pretty stellar deal if you’re a mile or 2 or 3 back and a lil trash panda wanders by right before dark… save you some energy getting back to camp

I picked up the early January whitetail muzz hunt

No idea if I’ll have time to go and I don’t have a boat but atleast the tag is a first step

You can get there with a cheap kayak or canoe. It’s barely a 1/4 mile paddle.

Maybe I can just use the 2 paddle boards I bought for my family

Paddle one and tow the other with gear on it

I’ve used a plastic game sled to tow my cooler with processed game in it behind my kayak

If you had gotten archery instead, I’d give ya a ride across in the jon boat. But I won’t be there in January.

i Could possibly give you a ride. I just can’t say for sure right now. I have 3 buddies plus gear already riding in my boat. just Message me when we get closer to the hunt

I’ve fished the pass there in a kayak. I’d make that crossing in a canoe or Jon boat under most conditions and in a kayak in all but the worst of storms.

I've applied for this hunt MANY times with no success. . .I would LOVE the opportunity!!! HAVE BOAT, BANK ACCOUNT - WILL TRAVEL!!! I really enjoy hunting from a boat or using a boat for access. . .if someone is looking for a hunting partner let me know. I live near Floral City, FL and do not mind traveling; FL, AL, GA or SC.

@Fl Canopy Stalker were u able to make it to ur quota hunt? How about a little description/run down.....pics would be cool too

Anybody else make it this year?
I did make it. It was very challenging this year because we had the first real north eastern blow through. The winds never dropped below 25 mph (sustained) with gusts well into the mid 40’s. The weather was in the 80’s until the final day of the hunt and it rained for 2 of the three days. All of these factors would not be the “normal” for that particular hunt but it was just a hard year.
The terrain is very sandy, with sand dunes along the coast and sand spurs all over. Lots of open access trails with tons of deer sign both sambar and whitetail. The soil is malnourished so most of the oaks are very short, the federal wildlife guy said that the white oaks that were 6’ tall were 20 years old and grew slowly because of the sandy soil. Every oak there was dropping acorns and there were palmetto berries all over the place so food was extremely plentiful. There is bedding and travel lanes everywhere and no signs of rubs at all. The deer on that island are extremely nomadic in nature since they can literally bed all over and have food source and water within 50 yards of anywhere they go. The one I saw came out an hour before dark. They have a morning hunt rule that is still hunt only and you must be out to your tree or blind before you the legal shooting hour (30 minutes before sun up). If you miss that window you cannot leave camp until after 9am. The FWC stays on the island along with park rangers full time. To say it was challenging was an understatement. The island is almost 20 square miles and it’s a 6+mile bike ride through sugar sand or a choppy boat ride to get from one end of the island to the other. The camping is primitive with no showers or water or cleared sites however they did have a few portapotties. The camp closest to the boat ramp is on the end that is mostly tall pine trees and palmettos. There are some really good swamps through there but the bucks tend to stay more inland. The swamps and lakes are dominated by the sambar deer, who stay in the water chest deep and eat under water vegetation. I bumped one on a morning hunt and it was massive! The other camp site on the far end has a lot of really nice lakes but you can only hunt along the south edge of one of them, the rest are closed to hunting. The far north part was closed for eagles nesting and habitat and there was a small area along the end with the lakes that was reserved for the 2 red wolfs they reintroduced into the wild. All the hogs have been eradicated. The sambar deer took a severe hit in health and numbers from the hurricanes in 2015 and 2018. They estimate about 70 of them there currently. The whitetail population is good though.
There were 54 hunters there that weekend. 46 on the end by the boat ramp and 8 more on the far end by the lakes. Only 1 doe was taken (this was mostly due to the extreme wind and weather conditions.) Myself and one other guy were the only ones who even saw a legal buck and I missed my shot on mine.
