Starting out in Australia

About as alive and elusive as the Sasquatch
Samsquanch is considered a mythical creature I guess....thylacine was/is real. I think 99% is mangy fox but some looks legit to me. All those highly respected rangers giving all their detailed accounts over the years are enough for me to believe ....plus William dafoe found 1

I currently live in Victoria, here we are required to have a game licence to hunt deer. There isn’t a tag system for any of the deer species, we can hunt them all year round pretty much. We have state forrests( public land) that we can hunt in Victoria as well as private property.
Welcome! So deer are feral and you can hunt them year round?? Bet somebody here would love to do a swap with you; gear for hunting... Have them place an order for one of @DanO's rappel kits, grab up a saddle in the classifieds, and secure an uber-cheap plane ticket.

That is true, they were/are real. There are reports of sightings now and again, sometimes pictures are taken of an animal but the pics are always blurred and indistinguishable. It would be cool if they were still alive and in good numbers as they are a fascinating animal.

Wasnt there a recent post on hunting kangaroo?
You can’t legally hunt kangaroos. Farmers are able to get a cull permit for a certain number of kangaroos, that all depends on the size of their property and the number of kangaroos sighted on there by a wildlife officer.

Welcome from Iowa. Great site to learn from and usually pretty entertaining as well

Hey Red Beard
In the state of Queensland the deer are classed as feral. In the state of Victoria where I live they are classed as game animals but with the exception of the hog deer, you can hunt all the other deer species all year round. I mentioned before that we don’t have a tag system but that’s not exactly true. The hog deer is the only deer species with a tag system and only has a one month long season, for the month of April. You have to apply for tags (no cost as it’s covered by your game licence) and you only get one tag for a stag/ buck and one tag for a doe, you have to take the harvested animal to a checking station where they take different measurements and also weigh the animal.
Hunting swapping would be an awesome way to travel the world

That’s true, they do sell kangaroo meat in supermarkets. The kangaroos are harvested by licenced professional shooters and typically with the use of spotlights, the average person however can’t go out and hunt them. Yes they are an extremely skittish animal, I’ve never heard of anyone using a call for them.

Hi nice to see another coming into saddle hunting, look forward to hearing your journey with the bow, you guys make some decent broadheads, managed to buy a few different types and get them to the UK.
Are you starting out with a compound or Trad?
You are lucky to be able to hunt public land like the US, here there is no bow hunting and it’s all private or syndicate land no public access to hunt.
Regards Wayne

Yes there are a few good broadhead makers here in Aus. I think mostly fixed blade, I haven’t come across any mechanical broadhead makers yet. If there’s any brand you favour let me know and I’ll see what I can do.
I’m starting out with a PSE 3G compound. I think we are even luckier/ more spoilt than the US in that we don’t have seasons, tags etc. However the reverse side of that coin is there isn’t the same type of animal management and the general public view on hunting isn’t great.
In Queensland when I was based in Townsville in the Army it took me almost two years door knocking and driving hundreds of km’s asking for permission to get onto private property to hunt. Now that I’m living in Victoria I’m spoilt in that I can be hunting deer only 15 minutes drive from home.
Regards
Adam
