Ok cool. I appreciate the insights. I just worked on this today. Have the plywood roughed out as far as shape goes, but I will wait until my steps come later this week to be sure about drilling the holes. I have a 1-1/4" hole saw lined up and waiting! I also ordered a Primal step to see if it's lower brace works better with the plywood platform.

I skipped the holes and just notched the sides of the platform. This eliminated any interference with the rope and allows the stepp to lock solid on the tree just like it would without the platform. I have it finished. I'll post an update video showing how it works.

Interesting. Maybe I'll have to wait to see your video before drilling my holes. I didn't know there were issues with caming the step tight with the platform on there.

Well my Primal Step came in the mail first so I went ahead and started drilling. I think standoffs might be different on this step as it does not fit in the measured holes very easily or completely.

I may need to make a second one of these specifically for the Primal step and save this for my WEs that shipped today.

Still curious about the notched version someone mentioned.

I'm really curious about your method. I can't quite see what you mean by "notched the sides".

I definitely get rope/strap interference on the primal step I've tried so far. Will have WE to experiment with tomorrow.

Difference between a Wild Edge step and a Primal step using measurements from the Instagram link above on this thread. The lower cross bar on the Primal step allows the board to lay flat/horizontal when cammed over.

Don't get me wrong. I love and support the Wild Edge company. Andrew's YouTube videos were a huge selling point for me in taking up saddle hunting and this climbing system. I bought a 6 step package from WE and just bought one Primal to experiment as a platform.

My guess is that when WE comes out with their platform they will have a modified step with a lower cross bar.

On a tree.

Had to cinch that strap super tight to keep the standoffs from pulling away. Once I did it was solid.

I couldn't do much lateral testing since I don't have my saddle yet (only using a safety harness at low altitude). From the ground I yanked it side to side pretty good and couldn't move it.

I think I'd like to change the strap it as it is heavy, bulky, and noisy. Thinking either amsteel or a WE rope.

I keep thinking there must be a way to make a platform that can be inserted in the step after it is installed.
You've got me thinking about this a lot. It would be ideal, since that step could double as a climbing aid and a platform base. I'm all about double tasking things to make them earn their weight on the carry in.

I'm not much of a designer/engineer though. Maybe one of our Apollo 13 gurus will come up with something for us to try.

Anyone out there up for the challenge?

The nice part about the Primal strap though is that you don't need to make the loop/knot under the board because it is already sewn on. You just cinch the whole thing tight and cam it over. Tough tradeoff I guess.

Thanks just ordered one
Cool. When you get it, if you wouldn't mind. Let me know how the straps are connected. The one on the right side of mine has me wondering if they made a mistake at the factory. It works still but, it doesn't look like the left side. Not sure why they would be different.
