Sterling Oplux Sewn Eye

I contacted knot and rope today to ask about splicing some Oplux for me. They said they only splice what they sell....

I also wanted to ask their personal recommendations as well but the phone call never got that far. The guy was pretty short with me. He seemed busy and didnt want to take this on for me. I hope others have a better experience.

On a positive note, @DanO Has a great website and the customer service is top notch!

If it’s a large enough company, you can try to call back and get a rep who is willing to help.

With att/Verizon/etc, I just call and hang up until I get someone who speaks clear English.

Dang! That's a complicated splice lol. But very cool.
Well in the process of trying this splice on the oplux, I discovered that the inner core of oplux is not braided... this means that the type of splice I found for dual core ropes will NOT work on oplux. Looks like the search continues, I'll keep working at it.

Splice instructions double braid with core

Looks like the Oplux is built like Tachyon. Both have an inner core that isnt braided. Check out these instructions, see if they work for you. Good luck.
Thanks, I may have to give that one a try. Started following this one from Samson last night... having difficulty burying the core tail back through the core. I may try doing the core taper first and then the bury opposite of the directions to see if that helps. If I can't get it to work, I'll scrap that section and try the splice you posted. Its all a learning experiment, hoping to find a solution that all of us diyers can easily do as long as it tests well.

Thanks for the link! The tachyon splice was the ticket and wasn't too difficult. Also there's a great video on YouTube to follow that helped a ton. Of note, I originally started with 10' of oplux... after my botched attempt I was left with 7', after splicing from eye to end of rope I'm at 6'2.5".

I set the splice pulling against my truck hitch and it isn't going anywhere, as with any splice... you should whiplock it in place so it doesn't loosen when there isn't any tension on it. However, for now since I don't have whipping twine, I'm going to leave it as is and just mark so I can see any slippage for my testing at home. I may whiplock it prior to sending off for official testing.

I did some testing this morning just using my short section as a tether and a triangle link since I made a small eye to replicate what I plan on doing with my rappel line provided this splice holds up well. Tested with my platform set up about 2' above the ground and tether set to eye level. I put all my 195lbs weight on it as well as bounced a few times for a shock load and spent about 30 min into hang time testing. So far I haven't noted any slippage of the splice. I did notice that my permanent marker lines are fading so I'll need to find another solution to monitor the slippage.

This is super slick. Thanks for figuring out a useful method. Please keep us posted when you get the break tests back.

You hooked this up to your truck and then used your truck to pull it? If so, I didn't know you had to pull that hard on a splice.

Slick! @Patriot38 Thank you much, I like that a lot. Looks like I have a new project in my future.

No problem, this thread is great if you haven't read it all yet. I'm new to Oplux this season as well and so far the manufacturer doesn't recommend splicing it. However, people are starting to figure out how to splice it and sounds like testing will be done shortly. If you are worried at all I would just get a sewn eye or find a reliable knot to tie. The splice looks sweet and I hope I can eventually splice mine and have complete confidence that its safe but for now it's a figure 8 and a back up knot for me.

Son of a gun. I had told myself I was retired from splicing after doing several splices in Predator (which WILL make you say bad words) but now I may have to buy some oplux and make myself a new tether and linemans with spliced eyes.....dang it! :D

I was staying off the Oplux bandwagon just because it needed to be sewn or knotted. This thread made me buy enough for a rappel rig. :( :) Oh well, anyway @DanO will have it here tomorrow.

I did a lot of cussing during my first few splices with Predator rope. The biggest trick I found was tapering the core prior to the final bury (1/3 fid past the exit point) and using a wire fid to pull instead of trying to use a push style fid. Hope this helps. It looks like that will be the same trick needed when splicing Oplux.

For those of you that had a hard time splicing predator and are getting flashbacks/anxiety while considering splicing oplux, you might want to look into using a soft fid (looks like it could be diy'd pretty easily with some amsteel). I always had good luck with a wire fid but it might be useful for someone. Here's a video of a guy using it on tachyon
(which will be VERY similar to splicing oplux)

I've spliced the Tachyon and I used a wire fid. IMO it made splicing Predator seem simple but I've done enough Predator now that I've kinda got it down. I'm willing to try to give the Oplux a shot to use as a rappel line. I guess I'll find out just how tough it is tomorrow.

Just for the final milking to cover the splice. I have a heavy bench but from prior experience with tight splices, the bench doesn't stay in place to get the last little bit buried so I just go out to the truck and tie the bitter end off on the hitch and go to town.

As others have mentioned, the manufacturer does not consider oplux splicable so until I get official testing results back, do your oplux splicing at your own risk.

Also when splicing tight ropes, a wire fid to pull the bury is your best friend, it won't get rid of the bad words... but it will decrease them and the frustration significantly.

Update on the spliced oplux... it is still holding up well in my testing. I am currently working on spliced eye 2 eyes with trc... I have two methods currently in work that I'll get back to on Monday hopefully to finish up and home test. I will then be sending the oplux splice and both trc eye 2 eyes in for testing and will report all findings.

Edit: did not pull the splice with the truck... just used the truck as a stationary heavy object to pull against to milk the cover over the finished splice to set the last little bit thats always super tight. Also helps to pull and snap the rope at the same time.
