Strange occurances in the woods

One more and I believe this is the last one...I was walking back to the truck one night when I saw 2 red glowing "eyes" in the woods off to the side of the trail ahead of me. I try not to use my headlamp when possible to avoid spooking deer so it was pretty dark aside from the red glow ahead. I wasn't sure if I was getting pranked or what but avoided the red glowing objects and skirted around to the parking lot. When I got to the parking lot, I met a guy unloading a deer cart and some other gear. I had a little small talk with him and he said he shot a doe. I said I'd help pull it out on the cart if needed and he obliged. We headed back down the trail off the parking lot and I noticed he was headed right towards the glowing "eyes". He reached down towards one "eye" pulled the first arrow out of the ground and twisted the lumenok off....I felt like an idiot. He had two lumenok arrows several feet apart marking blood on the trail. The angle I was walking back to the truck made them seem right next to each other on the trail. Needless to say, I kept that story to myself while helping him with the doe.

During all this quarantine business I've been rewatching some shows and came back around to one of my favorite survival type shows, Survivorman. Eventually i got to the 6th season, the Bigfoot season.

Have any of you had any strange events or sightings in the woods worth sharing? It doesnt have to be sasquatch related. Share the story of the weirdest thing that has happened to you.

love this thread and strangely I was going to post one myself. There is a KILLER “weird sightings in the woods” thread on the hunting beast that is an all time greatest thread.

I was walking in at 4 am with my buddy, I turned to the trail on the left , he was heading to the lakebed. I got 30 steps down my trail and several coyotes started howling.. maybe within 40 feet of me. This property doesn’t allow guns during archery season. My buddy started text me, you ok? You ok? I heard them run off, cleaned my shorts..then hiked the last mile.

Don’t take this question the wrong way, but were you in danger? I ask bc I have a ton of coyotes and coywolfs where I hunt and I have heard them yipping about 20 yards off while I’m gutting by myself and once when I wasn’t armed so I have wondered if I’ve ever been in danger. I’ve researched and it seems like coyotes are pretty harmless unless you are a small child or are in a location where idiots feed them and they are not scared of people.

A couple years I was walking into my stand about an hour and half before shooting time. Full moon, so no head lamp. I bump a deer right beside my stand. She didn't bolt, but pranced off, right into a pack of coyotes. Less than 50 yards away. I could literally hear them tearing her apart, her bleats almost screams, their feeding howls. I have never climbed a tree faster in my life.

I've never had a scary moment with hogs or coyotes. I've been startled, but it's always immediately followed by a goody grin. I'm of the opinion that you're more likely to die driving to the woods than you are doing anything once you get there.

Only animal I've ever had "bow up" on me was a pack of feral dogs. Had one come out in front of me on the trail walking out and growl. Two others circled behind. No gun. Took and arrow out of the quiver and walked straight at the first one with every intent to kill him if I reached him. I've always believed dogs can read body language, and mine must have been pretty convincing.

Had a lab growl and raise his hackles at me once in a tree too. He bugged out when I shouldered the 7mm remmag.

I take no guff from critters. Dogs are the only ones who have tried to give it to me. Most animals fear humans. Not dogs. I always stay aware in areas with meth shacks and rotten trailer parks.

I was bear hunting over bait once in northern Maine when just before dark a nice 250 or so # boar came in right under my stand 14 ft. below me. He just appeared without making a sound. As he stood standing there without moving a muscle for about 3 or 4 minutes I prepared to shoot. I was bow hunting as usual and never really felt the need to carry a sidearm so no backup weapon other than my buck knife. He started towards the bait which was about 15 or so yards away, got halfway and just froze. Just then I heard another bear start popping his teeth and really ripping up the alders behind the bait. The bear I had been watching took off like his a** was on fire. Right as it got dark everything went completely silent. You could have heard a pin drop but I had no clue where the bear was now. I sat there for another 20 minutes or more and he never came in. Meanwhile it got really dark as it was an overcast night. Climbing down that tree and sneaking back to the truck was about as nervous as I've ever been. A S&W .357 rides my hip now whenever I'm on a bear bait. Other than that I haven't seen where anybody has mentioned a porcupine screaming after dark which also sounds like a woman getting murdered.

Here's another true story . In the suburban deer management program I hunt in we use to hunt in the woods next to a cemetery. My son was hunting with me and he saw a old man walking a dog. The he said the man came out of nowhere and he or the dog made a sound as they walked. My son looked the other way and when he looked back toward the man and the dog they were gone. When my son told me the story I thought it was just a joke. Then about a week later I was hunting by myself and I looked over my shoulder and there was the old man and dog and they never made a sound as they walked. I looked away for a few seconds and when I looked back they were gone. I talked to some of are other hunters that hunted next to the cemetery and they had similar stories about the old man and his dog. Very spooky.

I've been spooked by a flock of turkeys coming off roost directly above me as I walked in an hour before daylight, which sounded like a helicopter directly over my head.

Another instance walking out of the woods after dark I had a Screech Owl scream one good time that made me jump out of my skin lol.

The craziest thing that happened had nothing to do with critters. I was heading in to a spot one morning that I had hunted for years. I had left the spot alone all season and waited for what I thought was going to be the right time to go in. Add I heard in I noticed a hard, best down trail that cut off of my trail that almost got me side tracked. I got myself straightened out and headed on in to the area I wanted to hunt. I had a very quiet morning in the woods and as the morning progressed I wasn't seeing much sign and realized the spot wasn't as hot any more. Around about 10 I climbed down the tree and headed back out toward the trail that I crossed on the way in to do some scouting. As I walked the trail I noticed a small pine about 3 inches in diameter pushed over and rubbed hard. Thinking I had hit the jackpot because of the tree I kept moving hoping the sign would get hotter. As I got further down the trail I noticed a hole about 2 foot in diameter dug in the ground and then I realized why my spot wasn't so hot any more. The hole had a 5 foot tall marijuana plant growing out of it. I called my brother in law who was just on the other side of the property. He came around to my side and we began to walk the area and found a total of 6 plants, all ranging about the same size. Needless to say, I have not touched that property since!

Sneaking into a stand one morning, I was doing a good job of being quiet, and got about half way of the ladder stand and a few turkeys were roosted in the tree. Almost fell off the ladder. Plus the others in the near by tree. When it got light I think 8 flew down.
Other than that nothing stops your heart like trying to sneak your way in tall grass and flush a pheasant from underneath yah.
We have had big foot conversations at work. I might have to go check those out.

I have 2. I once had a tree stand in a super thick big piece of woods behind a mall. I was in my stand one morning and heard some walking through the thick stuff. Shotgun comes up waiting for a deer to step out but instead it was a homeless guy. He walks up to my bait pile and grabs 3 sweet potatoes, turns around and leaves lol.
Another time when I was a teenager I was walking to my stand in the dark with a crappy flashlight and heard something heavy jump out of a tree and land in the leaves behind me. I turn around and put the light on it... it’s a red tailed hawk and he jumps up at my light. I fell backwards and left the light. I ran away about 30 yds and sat until daylight came. Never made it to my stand

I had a friend who was a special force army ranger. He was deployed Panama. He told me a crazy ghost story a couple times while we were drinking and he would get very emotional. There was some kinda for get together for his squad or team or whatever they r called and I was invited. Later in the night after some drinks they were talking and 6 hard, bada**, special forces guys were all crying over the experience they had in the jungle. I have never personally seen anything paranormal but I believe people when they tell their experiences.

When I was about 10 years old me and my family were camping the night before opening day. All of us were standing around the fire and out of no where we hear a mountain lion scream. Keep in mind in Missouri the conservations department swears up and down we don't have any lions. After the scream we all came up with the idea to go to bed lol We climbed into the truck bed camper and drifted off to sleep, my dad holding his Ruger SBH in 44 Mag and me holding my red ryder lol

Kinda like sneaking away from a leopard blind or a lion bait...when you know the cat (s) are there but you didn't get a shot. That 308 bolt gun feels mighty puny!!

Let see:
Busted groups of Ptarmigan multiple times, they take off like helicopters feet from you. Multiple strokes there.
Cousins and I were bear hunting up in the mountains outside Girdwood back home(Alaska). We tracked this brown bear up and down the mountain and happened upon some human foot tracks. Followed those for a bit and realized they were our boot prints. Then realized the bear had taken us in a loop and was tracking us tracking it. Retired to camp after that.
Another time hunting Ptarmigan out in Nikiski on the Kenai peninsula (again, Alaska) by an old abandon military outpost. Again with my cousins were walking around and kept getting the neck crawlies. We started hearing a girl screaming. We looked around like scared teenagers with guns would do and didn't find anything, not any evidence of anyone even being there in years. There are tons of stories of kids committing suicide out there and cults using it. We never went back.
Another time moose hunting in Alaska my cousin shot a moose(ever notice your cousins get you in trouble) and we tracked it to were he saw it fall, probably 400 yards. This was in an alpine environment with marsh type ground so he saw it fall. We tracked it to were it fell in a group of trees and when we got to it it was gone. Huge blood trail, huge ground disturbance were it had fallen, huge pool of blood and then nothing. Like it flew away. We found some other tracks leading away from the kill, human in form but waaay larger. I'm not saying it was bigfoot but....
And my all time favorite. My cousin and I were snow machining late at night on the wildlife refuge behind my house. It was around midnight and we had stopped to look at the northern lights. We must have gotten so engrossed in watching cuz we didn't even hear the caribou herd coming until we were in their midst. The herd literally walked a round us, about a 50 head herd. It was so surreal, this caribou herd walking slowly while we were sitting their watching the northern lights. It was like a Nat Geo show. That's probably my best outdoor memory.

I was getting ready to climb up a tree last fall on some public ground when I heard rustling in the leaves. I was expecting to see a deer or squirrel but instead saw an old grey bearded, grey haired man carrying what looked like a beer in old 80s style camo coveralls about 40-50 yds away. He had no bow/gun, no backpack just a beer. I kind of shrugged it off for a second and continued about my business heading up the tree (it was a good spot I've seen deer at before). I felt the feeling of someone watching me and I looked in his direction and he had stopped and was just staring in my direction. I waved, he waved but just kept staring. I went about my business hunting the rest of the day and he had moved on I texted the wife about the situation, never saw any deer, etc. The most odd thing about the situation is the fact I was several miles back in the woods and it isn't exactly easy for me getting back there (not to mention a frail looking old man) there was no other vehicle in the parking lot when I arrived and he wasn't carrying a gun, bow, water, backpack, etc.

Hey babe, I’ll be out for awhile. I’m going “hunting” haha

When I was in grad school I spent two summers working in great smoky mtns national park doing rare fish surveys. We spent weeks in the field, in the middle of nowhere, had our run-ins with bears, hogs and all other manner of wildlife and never had an issue despite sometimes being covered in guts from doing fish stomach sampling/predation surveys.

One day myself and two of my technicians were way off trail snorkeling a section of stream looking for some rare fish. On the ridgeline above us (around 10 am, we got started around 8) we start hearing this crazy screaming. Loud! Sounded maybe a couple hundred yards away.

It's tough to describe exactly what it sounded like, but it was definitely no animal. Not words exactly, but it sounded like someone being stung by hornets or perhaps being murdered and screaming in Japanese if I had to described it. Just nonsensical, frantic shrieking and yelling. It lasted several minutes and then just as suddenly went silent.

After we were done, we hiked out the way we heard the noise. Never saw a sign of what it might have been. To this day I wonder what that might've been.

Was setup on a fresh clear cut on State Forest land during early bow season, only about 500 yards through some oaks from a private farm field. Heard a plane coming in the distance that seemed extremely loud for the ways off it was. As it got closer I see him clear the tree line coming over the clear cut. The thing looked like it was headed right at me, mind you I only climb about 20' high. He passes just over the tree line and I realize its a crop duster. Crop dusting is not a common occurrence around this area as most farms are used for cattle or hay. But a new influx of soy and corn field leasing had started that year and I guess some farmers were using airplanes to spray. I thought for sure I was going to die in a plane crash sitting in a tree stand. :tearsofjoy: He made about 12 total passes that day, all of which I was used to after that first "OH CRAP" moment.

I've never told this story online...just to family. However this buggered me something fierce. About 10 years ago, I had a piece of property that was 40 acres. I was walking down the trail...and I was late. As I crossed the creek and came up the small hill to a field I heard, and felt a roar that I've never heard before. It was so loud and powerful that I felt it in my chest. I froze just on the edge of the field and my attention was drawn to a tree that I had hunted the previous year...but what drew my attention was a feeling that danger was there...serious danger. I spent 10 years in the Marines and army as an infrantry man and have never heard that type of roar before and only since when I got home and did some research. I had my .45 on me at the time (private land in Illinois) and pulled my buck knife. As I stated, my attention was drawn to this tree about 60 yards away, every hair on my body was standing on end and the goosebumps where everywhere. The strongest feeling of a presence in my mind was telling me to turn around and go back to the truck...I however being a stubborn Marine refused to do so. I don't know why I said what I said, but I spoke outloud to the tree..."I mean you no harm and will go to the west if you go the other direction." I then felt at peace...and walked to my stand. That day there was no sounds in the woods...and I mean not even a squirrel was moving...no birds chirping...nothing. What was strange (actually stranger) was a few times before and the season before I had heard loud wood knocking...in the direction of where I felt my attention was being drawn to. After I said what I said...I felt as though the presence at that tree had left (goosebumps hitting me now) and I went off to my stand.

When I got home, I look on the bigfoot website and looked at illinois. Sure enough there are sightings in the town that I was hunting next to and the next town over. Again, this roar was like nothing I've ever heard and don't want to hear it again. The tree that my attention was drawn to was not the base of the tree, but about 10-12 feet up the tree...like what was watching me was at that level.

From the link I referred to on YouTube (earlier post on this thread), watching some of the videos, it appears common for people to have that feeling of impending doom / dread / need for flight when they observe a Bigfoot or experience some things that are attributable to a Bigfoot.

Interesting.

Semper Fi! I remember decades ago when I was in boot camp at PI, we had some prior army at boot camp. I would have thought that army boot camp would be sufficient for the marines. Guess not. Surprising how many folks serve in multiple branches of the military.
