Stroller suggestions

Before I forget, wanted to mention… in the future when you start to consider larger car seats, two features sold me on paying the extra cash for Diono. (1) they’re narrower, for us with two kids an adult can sit between them in the rear seat, which is near impossible with other wider models. (2) The Scandanavians keep kids rear facing much longer than we typically do in the US, and their road child injury statistics reflect this. But whenever you do transition the car seat to forward facing, the Dionos incorporate a ‘screamer’ type deceleration strap, where if you had a collision some of that energy is better absorbed by the shoulder straps. My buddy an auto industry safety engineer tipped me off to this.

How soon some people put their kids forward facing is unbelievably concerning. I wouldn't know the majority of this stuff without my wife but keep your kids rear facing as long as possible. The way their bones are still growing and forming and the way impacts effect their body based on forward or rear facing is crazy and should be emphasized so much more. I think most people turn them around early because they think their legs can't be comfortable or it's just nicer to see their faces but I'd much rather them be a little uncomfortable (which I don't think they are) than have severe injury or death during an accident because they were turned around prematurely.

I appreciate the thoughtful protective nature of your post but cant help but laugh when I think back to my childhood and how I rode in my parents vehicles. :)

Yes Dale Earnhardt comes to mind every time I think about this.

they also install in commercial airline seats, at least the model I had

That's not diono exclusive, I've had multiple Britax versions on board however have since bought these strap harnesses that are great for forward facing but still needing boosters age kids for airline only and check the carseats

Similar to how we used to hunt off of 2x4s with no safety harness. Methods improve and I'm thankful for both of these examples.

It’s like you people are speaking another language. What the heck is a jogger and a stroller?
So what was the consensus on the best all around jogger/stroller/car seat? Asking for a friend.

We got a mockingbird. Works great for air travel. Otherwise we bought a used BOB, and it’s the go to for anything and everything where my truck goes.

Note - it’s 100* every day here, kid can’t spend much time outside. Will report back some time around December

Whichever brand system you can currently get all the items at the price vs quality point you are looking for. Other that a few little extras here and there, there’s not much difference that I could see between Graco and Chicco as far as quality and usefulness.

Check out Marketplace for spare/backup strollers. We got a Graco system as our primay, but added a $10 jogging stroller that we can take off-road. Now that kiddo is almost 4 we still bring it along if we're going for a longer walk except now it carries snacks and stuffies. Unless someone gets too tired to walk and needs to get pushed because "waah, I'm a baby, push me in the stroller!".

What’s the consensus on buying new vs used? My wife said she doesn’t want to buy used because… she just doesn’t. While “I just don’t want to” is compelling, I’m still looking for other reasons why it may be wise to buy a new over used or vice versa.

My money is on the fact that strollers are hard to wash, and motherhood magnifies any preexisting concern about cleanliness. Ask her how she'd feel if you could take it apart, wash the soft parts, and wipe the whole thing down with bleach.

Then, when she says, "no," take a breath and realize this is the cheapest concession you'll make during the whole mess. ;)

We bought a new mockingbird. Well, grandma did.

It’s fine.

We bought a Bob used for 100.00 on marketplace.

It gets used 100% of the time.

Only time we use the mockingbird is when we’ve flown because it’s easier.

We thought we loved the mockingbird until we got the Bob.

This isn’t a plug for a Bob.

This is a plug for go buy used strollers on marketplace, and see what you like. Just like here with saddles.

Or compound bows.

Or climbing sticks.

Or bicycles.

Or any of this stuff.

If you don’t spend 100% of your time on smooth, and I mean smooth pavement, or on human polished surfaces, you’ll regret anything with little wheels and no suspension.

We’re outside cats. Big wheels and some shock absorption goes a long way when your kid isn’t spot on with neck and head control.

We rolled around in the back of a pickup truck on trips to get hay

We have both new and used. And used them both. Primary was bought new, but we had a used jogging stroller for beach trips or other excursions, or walking around the yard. The new, spendy one was, of course, much nicer and comfortable. But it was nice to have a cheap used one that we weren't invested in, that we didn't care if it got muddy or dirty or whatever.

Strollers start out with good intentions with the first child - well cared for, washed, waxed, etc. Along comes the second kid and decrease that amount by 75%. By the third kid it gets rinsed down once a year with the garden hose. Kids smear food in them, spill milk and other drinks in them, puke in them, pee in them, poop in them, puke/pee/poop in them at the same time, if it’s a double stroller then p/p/p x2, dogs get set in them, they get dumped on the ground, see the picture I’m Bob Rossing over here? If they say none of that happened they’re lying. My advice buy new. And all of applies x1000 to a car seat. Don’t ever buy a used car seat not to mention it may have been in crash.

Ok,

I’m watching my old lady twist herself in knots with stroller and car seat combinations.

I’m watching the power of marketing and “you’re not a good enough deer hunter to kill deer without THIS product” being replaced with “you’re not a good mother unless you use THIS product.”

Interesting to see the parallels between these two worlds.

So, I need some smart practical dad input. Yeh I know it’s a saddle hunting forum. Exactly. Bunch of nerds. Help me out here.

Looking forward to the response this thread gets, considering when I searched “stroller” as a key word for thread titles, only one came up - a fella converting his jogging stroller to a deer cart.
Don't get sucked in! We now have 4 strollers. Two normal single seaters, a collapsible "umbrella" one, and a double. Two were gifted to us but our favorite is a single we literally picked up off of the side of the road. We have picked up all kinds of stuff and took hand me downs and its not because we can't afford the stuff we just quickly realized most of this stuff isn't worth 1/3 of what it costs and you're lucky to use it for one year. Our brands are the grayco but other brands are fine. No stroller is worth 500 much less 1000 dollars.
