Stupid Goals?

1. Shoot a Sika deer on public land.
2. Shoot a buck from my ghost blind (I'll have to talk myself out of sitting in my saddle)

First and foremost have fun. second hunt at least 30 times this season.

I think I’m going to try to self film a successful hunt this year. Tried it a couple years ago and sat with the camera a dozen sits and didn’t see a deer. That never happens so I left it at home and started killing stuff. I’ve got a couple youth hunts for my son and will try to get him his first public land deer and maybe get it on film.

1. Kill A deer.
Im with you. I just want to kill a deer. Does anybody realize that 99%of the stuff on the internet about hunting is telling you how to kill a “mature buck”. Then they go on to tell you how much different it is than just hunting regular deer. Well where can I find out how to just hunt regular deer?

Maybe I should write a book. I seem to be an expert at killing “regular” deer.

Nothing really new for me this year. Hunt as much as I can without getting divorced or fired. Fill my buck tag with something around 100" or better. Enjoy the process, really for me there are two consistent stressors I have to ignore, hunting pressure and the prospect of eating tag soup. I was able to hit the woods yesterday to hang a couple cameras and do some early scouting and the woods already looked fairly fall-like, really got the juices flowing. My #1 go-to area was logged off, so seeing if I can figure that out again and throwing in some areas I haven't hunted before.

So How about Friday night I realize the camcorder is mia. Decided to film with action camera. Dropped a doe and it was in time lapse mode or something. Looked like an old gas station security video.

I did a few years of trying to get a kill on every WMA in middle Tn. It seems one WMA would mess me up every year but it was fun map hunting and killing the first hunt of new to me WMA. Been 99% two years In a row. Never hunted the same spot twice. I haven’t tried in a few years maybe I’ll try it this year but I think I will have limited hunting opportunities again this season

See you in a tree, Ricky

I really freaking like this idea! I'm a middle TN guy as well and usually only hunt on the 2-3 WMAs closest to my house. But this would be fun.

Yes this is totally true! I kill does and young bucks every year with the hope that an old giant will walk out and present me with an opportunity. But I have so much fun seeing other deer, that I don't want to devote my whole season to stalking one stubborn, hard to kill survival machine buck. As for learning how to kill regular deer, I use the same strategy on every piece of public in Tennessee I hunt:

1. Find food source (green field or acorn flat, etc)
2. Find sign at food source to ensure deer are using it (fresh poop and tracks mainly)
3. Find trails leading out of the food source back to thicker areas (these will be where the deer are bedding)
4. Set up on what ever trail seems to have the freshest sign as close to the bedding/thick area as possible
5. Sit and observe, make adjustment if needed, then shoot "regular" deer

I feel your pain with the logging. They tore up the place I've been hunting for 25+ years. I'm going to be looking at it like I would a new spot. The beautiful part is they created a lot of edge, and defined a couple of travel corridors. I'll be concentrating my efforts in these corridors.

I bought a ratty12 foot Radisson, I want to put a swamp donkey in it. I think I found the spot. Just have to decide if I want to try before it turns frigid and hope they're moving for bow season. Or sit in the snow while everyone pushes for me ...
