Summit Open Shot alternative to LWHC

This might be the way to go. I hate the belt on the LWHC. It grabs on everything unless you hunting those perfect straight smooth poplars like them NE boys.

I like the new mod Bwhana
I’m still waiting for someone to come out with a climbing platform that is lightweight and foldable like the LW, but with a less grippy belt and better angle like the Summit.
Are you listening Out on a Limb Mfg???

I have really tried to like those cam overs even traded for another Ridgerunner recently, but the LWHC is definitely my favorite platform. I love being able to make micro adjustments quietly and on command. I never lock mine down either. I move around the tree as the sun and wind dictates.

I am awaiting delivery of a Lone Wolf Hand Climber. I decided to see if my old Summit Open Shot top would work and I have been pleasantly surprised.

It weighs 4lbs 6oz and is rock steady climbing. Doyle’s hoist fits like a glove on the front brace. I used 650lb 2mm Dyneema Ironwire to make foot loops.

I think the LWHC will be a little lighter and more compact, but I’m thinking the Summit will be easier to climb (I am going to try some things to change the angle of the LW arms before I resort to the @Adrena123 Bolt Mod).

After about 20 climbs, my average time to 20’ with the Summit has been around 3 minutes. And I’m not overly exerting myself to get there.

What, no Crocs? Lol. Seriously, I have a LWHC, I also have a viper and I can imagine the open shot would beat the LWHC hands down. I tried to get an open shot top before I bought the LWHC, but couldn’t get it.I like the cable much, much better than the belt.

Oh I get it, ROS is my go to I was thinking maybe a way to weave a net in the middle. Not for full body weight just maybe a heel or toe for positioning, rather than give up that area in the middle.
Maybe some thin aluminum sheet riveted to the stand or some canvas with grommets sewn together with 550.

It does tend to get a wobble when side pressure is applied and I have noticed it can be very noisy on hard barked trees as you pivot. Its not just the climb with the lwhc that drives me nuts. The way the standouts are on the summits grip the tree much better than lwhc as well and just feels locked in much more than the teeth on the LW option. I did notice that it has been easier to use with the jx3 than the other types of saddles for whatever reason.

I saw a guy that used a hose clamps around the arms to create the angle. With the clamp screw mechanism under the arm resting on the sloped part of the cast.

Yep, climbing with the Summit is a million times better, but I spend way more time hunting than climbing and I like the LW as a platform much better. I’ve never experienced any noise issues, but you are definitely right that the Sunmitt feels more locked in.

Not an openshot, but its close cousin. I had been testing this one with @mtsrunner whoopie sling method and it works, but I wanted more control like I had with the Portaclimb Cadillac foot piece. I used a heat gun to custom bend some scrap PVC pipe today and it is money for me. A little vet tape wrap and it was ready to go. Just another option that will work on this hand climber or the openshot. I tried the summit plastic foot stirrups from my son's viper, but like these much better. This hand climber has the tabs with holes for the flip up seat, which worked well for attachment, so you may have to get more creative with the other models if you have one.

Is this a modified summit sentry sd? If so, is it working well for you? I have that stand and I’m considering doing this mod. Thanks in advance

I actually bought this on off the site a while back and it was already modded with the cross pieces, so I don't know the exact model it came from.

Do you know what the cross pieces are made of?

I made one of these as an experiment a couple years ago. Thought I would throw it in here just for reference sake:

It worked, but was kinda heavy and did not pack well.

I would recommend the rope mod to the LWHC. Works just fine. No drilling and no clanking of metal.

he’s been running the rope angle mod quite awhile now. It is better than drilling, agreed.

Yep. I started out with Bwhana rope mod and never tried anything different. It works great. I have almost two full seasons on it now. I experimented with several different tape options to keep the rope in place. I have settled on hockey tape. It holds and doesn’t tear up as quickly as other options. I find that it helps to not tape it too tight. A little bit of play is ok.

So enlighten me. What do you use to climb with your hands??

You just sit in your saddle and hold yourself off of the tree with the palm of your hands with arms locked. While doing that bring your knees up towards your chest. Move tether up and repeat

I have both the Summit Open shot and the LWHC setup. The Summit has been my go-to for a few seasons now. Just hang from your tether and zip up the tree. I have 85% pine trees where I hunt so it works well. I just strap it to my backpack or JX3 and go. I'll use a platform with the JX3 since I need to rotate around the tree. I've hunted out of the LWHC several times. I enjoy the lighter weight and the ability to hunt smaller diameter trees (although that may not be wise based on reported breakages), but the belt tends to get caught on pine bark much more than the summit cable. You need to be much slower and make many more adjustments. Also, I need to shift it to a good angle more often. It's also not as sturdy, so you're always concerned with overloading it or having it drop a little. It's so light and packable, that I've considered bringing it in with the Summit in case the best tree is a small tree. I've added tether straps to advance the tether this year, which will hopefully keep more of the slack out of my line and keep my fingers outside. The only way I'd ever use sticks or steps is if I was hunting north of the Mason-Dixon line. I do not miss that CF at all. I wanna get up most trees to any height securely and within ten minutes without doing some Cirque de Sole stuff. The Summit weighs about 7 lbs, because I added aluminum expanded metal and an aluminum bar, but the walk isn't bad compared to my Summit 180. Especially if you're in any kind of shape and have a frame pack. Once a good climbing platform comes out, I'll be the first in line. On all-day sits I'll still bring my big summit in. With good transport straps it isn't bad at all and it's a hotel in the tree. Best way to get high to see down into cutover.
