Tagged out what now?

anywhere to shoot your bow indoors?

i'm in a similar situation for 2 weeks because i only rifle hunt on private land or in the big woods (national forest) and can't get to either this year (don't want shot by a yahoo)

so i won't bowhunt again for 2 weeks

I actually shoot or was shooting off my balcony until I woke up to my glendel plowed into the ground and both legs broken. Seems the local deer didnt like him.

my brother lives in the country and won't take the antlers off his 3d deer

this thing has been curbed stomped at night by dominant bucks twice! and he gets mad about it, while i think it is cool

last one was a huge for around here 10 point that bent the rebar in the ground that go into the legs and when it was on the ground stabbed it all over the neck and vitals many times....a buck that weights over 200 lbs is a dangerous animal!

For me, it’s now time to evaluate the lessons learned from the season. Climbing methods, hanging methods, locations, processing, etc are all looked at to what I can improve upon.

There are a few tweaks to my climbing and hunting but the biggest is location. I have to completely rethink where I hunt and improve those areas.

Hate to say it but I despise duck hunting. bc it limits access here (can't be on the water after 1 pm) in Arkansas the way they cater to the duck hunters but I understand it's their cash cow. Still leaves a bad taste for me but I'm all for others doing it bc the woods are empty pretty much after duck season opens.
I'd encourage you to look at it this way:

Can you change it? No. Can you benefit from it? Not if you don't duck hunt. I can promise you that shooting ducks is more fun than despising anything.

never had one work while hunting FWIW. lol

it's probably like grunting and rattling....depends upon your location (pressure and buck to doe ratio)....those guys in kansas, etc. not only have the lowest pressure and biggest bucks but they can call them in too!

the only deer i've ever had respond to calls were young bucks (edit: that i saw, i've probably had mature bucks respond and bust me without me knowing they were there), and even they were smart enough to walk in looking into the trees! their hearing is good enough that a buck i know was not within 60 yards when i called walked in and stopped and looked up into the trees around me while i was motionless....he finally got to my tree and he stared at me for a while

I just called in a monster on my lease. screwed it up royally but he was comin. he took the looooong way around to wind me and was very successful in doing so. cool to see how smart they can be. i was on the ground out in the middle of a swamp i was crossing and he pinned me. i glassed him and he had the sun to his back. im sure i flashed the sun right at him. took off like a bat out of hell.

I "might have" called in a nice buck Nov 6th and he wasnt so lucky (tending a doe). i say might have because who really knows if he was gonna come by anyway. i use my grunt pretty sparingly only when i need to turn him around. prolly works less than 10% of the time and only during the rut (for me)

it's hard to prove if you don't see them, but a lot of folks say that if you blind call in areas where the buck can easily get down wind to check you out, then they do that and you never even see them

anecdotally, when i got back into hunting around 6 years ago after a hiatus, the first few years i used scents, rattle horns, grunt tubes, and bleat can calls and followed instructions online on how not to overdo it and even watched videos of calling sequences

in hindsight, the days when i called, i saw fewer deer

interesting point. never thought about it like that but makes a whole lot of sense.

Try to give them a reason to come directly, i.e. by setting up for calling where downwind is a steep bank or ravine or a pond etc. They will be more apt to come in directly. I try to call very sparingly when I call but I can tell you that usually with a conservative approach and iffy wind.... I see nothing. When I get aggressive at the right time of year and the right wind or a back stop that prevents them from getting downwind, I have had more success calling in bigger bucks. Does it work consistently for me? Never. Enough to warrant it when nothing else seems to be working? Absolutely.
