Talk me out of a climber....

If I didn't walk through mountain laurel and other brush on the regular I'd still be using my Summit. Easiest and fastest way to climb as a mobile hunter by far imo. Just not the easiest way to be mobile in regards to getting from point A to B.
The steel Ole man climber I had was huge and heavy but it was rock solid on the tree, comfortable, and easy to climb.

I have a Lone Wolf Alpha hang-on that gets used the least. Between my Cruzr XC and my Summit Viper climber, it's a toss up. It depends on where I'm hunting, as to what I use. If I'm going to an unknown location, I'll take the saddle every time, just so I don't get forced into a tree that's not in the best location. :cool:

All things being equal, it's hard to beat the simplicity and comfort of my Viper. I just shot a nice doe out of it, on Monday. I was in a tree that had no limbs, but the location required a little more height than I have climbing sticks for with my saddle. :) In reality.... It's all about having the tools in your arsenal for hunting! :cool:

Yeah I kinda wish the Out on a Limb people would make one with the RR XL... I can only dream.....

A couple of examples/ problems or difficulty you encountered? Penny for your thoughts?

lol, although i have owned and loved the openshot, i never used it as you describe, i was just ''talking you out of it'' like you wanted. On the subject though, me personally, i always had problems with summits cable system and the way it feeds into the tubes of the stand....it always managed to make ALL the noise when i was setting up.

Loving that "ALL the noise"!!

Loving that "ALL the noise"!!

I can still remember a hunt i made years ago on pearl river when we had one those really,really cold winters and my boots ended up freezing to the stand....i fought that thing so hard and the cables were so stiff and kept rubbing the crap out of the tube...between that noise, me cussing, and my teeth chattering....i probably scared off every deer in a 5 mile radius....but it was super light and some times it was easier than others. I had the ol man stand with garden hose looking tubes before that and was super heavy so the open shot was a dream.

How about try it and see if YOU like it? If you do, continue. If you don’t, stop.

I used an API footpiece. It was miserable.

My suggestion would be to buy every cheap, used loc-on you can find and preset them. Even a small loc-on is a giant platform in saddle hunting use.

Please talk me out of a climber, specifically the Summit Open Shot SD, as an alternate platform option.

I've got sticks and platforms, but I feel as though this is the simplest means for a saddle hunter to use the lower portion coupled with a ROS, outside of 2TC.

Is there a reason other than the flexibility of sticks and platforms, crooked trees aside, that appreciably excludes the other?

What's your thoughts?

You're better served waiting on the $900 LWCG mini-climber, and using just the bottom half :)

If you’re asking to be talked out if it then it’s to late and you’re already married to the idea because you see no fault in it. That’s how every method is for all of us it’s all a big cat and mouse game of preference. That being said my buddy did the climber deal thinking he was best off. Wich made zero sense because he switches to a saddle because he’s afraid of climbers. (Yea idk either) long story short he hated it m and quickly realized it fully defeated the purpose of being light and compact and switched to one sticking.

Suppose a big part is where you hunt. I’ve only got public land to go to and can’t trim branches so I don’t think it would work well for me, but that isn’t saying it wouldn’t be great for someone else.

I was really only getting it for the bottom section, as a saddle platform, there are some areas with piney that I hunt. I just really want to get a feel if people have used them that way or is it, sticks w platform, or climbers....

There's a few threads on Summit climber mods already. Search relative to:

@mtsrunner
@Bwhana

and a couple others.

Cant lie, i love my open shot. But like all climbers, it’s limited to tree size. My main reason for going to saddle and climbing method i use is i can literally climb any tree of any size that big enough. I save my open shot or my SD mini for the piney woods, which i seldomly hunt
