Team 10

I was covered up in 8-9 does at 0-25 yards for an hour eating under me on my little property this evening. Was praying for a grunt, but he never showed. STILL have not seen a buck on the hoof while hunting this year. I watched the Does hop over the main road and took the edge of my power line straight to my stand AND then a hard right to my micro winter Rye plots! They finally came in, like a thick shag carpet. They were eating acorns and rye, back and forth! Looked like fun!

My antler drought has to end soon, going back at it at 6am!

It is supposed to start cooling off here mid-week so my plan to work today and tomorrow and have Wednesday, Thursday and Friday open for hunting. Also, I picked up a small permission property the other day and I need to go check that one out. It's about 24 acres just outside of town. Its real benefit is it is close to the house so I can make some quick hunts. The owner wants venison and I hope to oblige. He also said he is cool with me using bolts so I'm probably going to set up some trees that way. Depending on how today goes, I may run over there this evening.

I have 2 other permissions, but they are about an hour north of me. I may do a few hunts up there soon as well.

I sat from 11am-sunset and just say 1 doe 10 minutes before closing time. 2 coyotes ran through 30 mins after I was setup. Pretty hunt but certainly let me down. I'll be back out again Saturday after this tropical storm passes through on Friday.

My rutcation is going so bad I cancelled part of it. MI public ground has been super busy. Went to IN for a week and saw 3 deer in 70* weather the whole week. Have tomorrow and Friday off to try and make something happen before great weather Sat will have the woods busy. Will get to hunt private next weekend, and Shiawassee reserved hunt after Thanksgiving.

I hope to get out soon. The weather is looking like it is about to get better. I had a bit of a hiccup yesterday. A season never goes by without some sort of vehicle issue and yesterday it raised its ugly head. I got T boned by an older lady and it did at least $6700.00 worth of damage to both doors on the driver's side. I'm taking it in next week to the body shop to get the repairs started. Neither one of us were hurt and she had good insurance and took full responsibility for the accident, so her insurance company is footing the whole bill plus they are providing me with a rental while it is in the shop. I'll probably end up with a Prius, lol.

Anyway, it could have been a lot worse. I believe I could drive blindfolded against traffic down the wrong side of the interstate at rush hour in a hailstorm and not get hit if it wasn't deer season.

My old truck (which I sold off) had a really bad habit of dying on the opening day of deer season and turkey season. It did it like clockwork for three years running. It worked like a champ until season stared. I hope it ended up in a compactor.

Killed 2 Does with my bow, loaded them up in my mini van for the 2 hour ride home at 2am, bout 6 years ago. ON the way home Mr Buck decided to TBONE and whipe out the entire front and side of my mini van! $17.000 worth of damage is where the adjuster stopped when he totaled the van! The buck left peircings of his brow tines and outlines of his main beam on the hood where his head snapped shut permanently! Feel your pain! That is my 3rd vehicle toast from deer!

The red dot is the brow tine puncher AND out line of main beam!

Wow. Man that stinks! Glad you were not hurt! That buck was really after those does!

Well, I am within 20 miles of the projected landfall of the TS/Cat 1 tonight and about an hour ago I lost power so I'm hoping it comes back up relatively quick...58 houses out and a main line down! I was planning to leave for the panhandle Friday and hunt through Tues/Wed but I will adjust based on Nicole's advice...lol! I don't expect much flooding or wind damage in my area, and last winter I installed high wind/impact rated windows so this will be a little test for them. It is strange not worrying about boarding up but I like it.... Some real cold coming this way early next week with highs near 60 and low 30s so that will have everything moving again so looking to get back in the woods soon! Good luck all!

Be safe. I'll be thinking about Ya'll down there.
Thanks....My power came back around 3pm but it gave me a good practice run with my generator since we've been fortunate and haven't had a storm this close in a few years. Starting to rain pretty solid and winds are picking up but are a steady 25ish with gusts to 40 or so. Figure it'll peak between midnight and 3 or so, but I'll check in in the morning. Enjoy those cool temps coming!

I've done it. I've also gone with just one antler more than anything. I've had bucks come into a decoy set of a buck only, doe only, 2-3 does, buck and doe/s. Wish I knew the secret, but I think it is just having a buck see them, then they come in. Only had Does freak out about decoys, and they don't always do that. The Doe that spotted my 3 decoys 2 days ago came in 20 yards and stood broadside for the perfect shot, stopped and looked for about a minute AND then did a head bob and foot stop before finally deciding something wasn't right and left.

Best part about decoying is that they stop deer to get a shot, especially when deer are moving this time of year. It also is the biggest rush to have a buck come to your decoy, more so when you have called them in from a far AFTER seeing them with the binos OR just cold calling them in and finally icing them with the decoy.
Any of you use your buck decoys without the antlers to try and be like a doe decoy? How's it work, if so?

Stay safe brother.

Stay safe brother.
Thanks Hossmiller! I came through with no real issues, other than 1 self inflicted. Power went off at 1pm yesterday and my wife works from home so I figured I'd be helpful and set up the generator. Well, 2 hours later the power was back and all was well....until this morning I realized the garage fridge/freezer was off! Lost some klondikes my wife bought yesterday morning and a few things that were cooked and frozen had thawed and wasn't able to keep. Wife was most upset about the ice cream, but oh well I guess if that's the worst I can take that heat....lol!

Nicole is currently raining a bunch in my panhandle areas so my plan is to head up Sunday morning and hunt through Thurs or Fri morning right now....

Yeah, I always run one antler. Agreed on everything you said. My thought is bucks will come in to either but usually when does see a buck decoy they’re not coming in range. At least that’s been what I’ve heard. I’ve had does be around a buck decoy and not care. However, I was wondering if does were more accepting of a decoy without antlers while bucks this time of year would still be interested and if just using a buck decoy without antlers was a good enough resemblance of a doe decoy compared to an actual doe decoy.

Well, I used 3 Doe decoys the other day and the doe that came in seemed fine UNTIL she realized none of my decoys were moving! WHEN she did the head bob and stomping AND they still didn't move, she bugged out. But, she was baited in originally AND had I not killed 2 Does already AND was only buck hunting, I would have dusted her at 20 yards. My 3D decoys that have antlers seem to look plenty good enough to pass as a doe WHEN you take both antlers off. I'd go with it.
