Team 3 Rules

Today is the last day of my season. I’m heading out for a no pressure, end of the season exploration of a chunk of woods I’ve never been to before.

Anyone still have an open season?

Good luck!

We have a few more weeks of bow season. I don't really need a doe but I will do a few cursory sits because.

They also instituted a CWD rifle season in my home WMU Jan 2-16 I think. Crappy I'm real, real salty about it. CWD is a crappy sitch all around but this season is an absolute farce because the public is going to get slam-hammered and the nearby private will be the same old same old. Does nothing to accomplish the goal of slowing CWD.

I hunt a couple other WMUs also but I'm going to start heading north a lot more with the CWD crap around home. It's like 45-75 minutes to jaunt up to my spots up there, whereas my spots closer to home are more like 30-45. But a lot more of my scouting focus is going to turn up there so I better start saving some gas money.

Yeah and I have off tomorrow. WI has an antler less holiday hunt from Christmas Eve through Jan 1. So that's my last chance with a rifle. I might take another freezer queen or I might just enjoy scouting with a gun. I'll be on public and the deer will be a long way from the access.

Our normal doe killing bonanza left us three short on the private I help out on. Second year in a row we picked the rotten weather day of the week. Foggy, had to modify drives for safety, shots were fast and close seemed like we had to shoot everything twice. I killed 5, but I wasn't feeling the greatest and didn't want to drag a pack around the woods so no saddle kills.

Some counties in WI run an extended archery season through Jan 31st, and that's either sex so I may hunt a little more as I start scouting but we already picked up a couple large sheds and I had some bow mishaps and currently need to get my new one set up and a peep installed so maybe I'll get out maybe I'll scout.

We had our first CWD positive on that private property last year. WI gives you an any weapon any sex tag good through the next years season with a positive CWD test. Nothing is good about CWD. Doug Duren went to HS with my mom and he's got a good thing going on his property, the land manager I'm helping shoot does is trying to do the same thing. With aggressive doe thinning Doug has kept rates at 5% (testing every deer) where the county average is 20% for hunter submitted deer. Biggest thing is that bucks pick it up at higher rates than does. Once CWD becomes endemic in an area the old age class bucks all eat it because they pick it up at 1-2 yrs old. Hard to know what's the best course of action and hard for small private landowners to be able to do anything at all alone.

I went out this afternoon for the first time since I shot my buck and saw 4 or 5 slicks. Closest was 38 yards and I’ll admit I thought about it but I haven’t been shooting my bow so I figured it was a bad idea. I think that’s it for me, I might sit one more time with the kid but that will be a ladder stand hunt if we do it. Enjoyed the season!!

Well fellas. It’s officially over. It was a fun year and I enjoyed the camaraderie of the team very much. If anyone ever needs a hand dragging one out, drop a line. Late night drags under the stars are my favorite activity.

I very well may take you up on that offer!
