4 years ago we got pictures of an impressive 2.5 year old in the big woods. We haven’t had a picture of him all year this year so I figured he got hit by a car because of this deer had been shot it woulda been all over the local Facebook pages. So this morning I figured I’d ignore that and I’d head to his last known core area. 4 mile hike get to the tree and there’s a dead fall leaning against it. Considered climbing up and going around the dead all but the wind made me skeptical so I found bother tree about 30 yards off. At 7:53 I look up and 100 yards away there he was. 25 minutes he slowly worked towards me feeding. Heart beating out of my chest the time had come he was at 40 heading towards an opening at 30. He cleared the opening but turned back to it. Full draw tried to stop him and he paid no mind. Now at 23 yards he looked up right at me. I panicked and try to get a shot off in time after I was evidently made. Hit a stick and watch the arrow fly straight to dirt. This deer for around here is a monarch. He’s 6.5 if our calculations were correct when we first saw him and I’d put him in the 22-24” spread range he was all of 200 dressed and thick mass tines to the sky I’d rough guess him at 185” deer of a lifetime for me and I botched it. Thankfully he only spooked softly ran off to I’d say 60 yards and slowly walked a big loop out of sight
Man. Hope you get him. Those encounters is what's it's all about. The one that got away sticks in my mind more then some of the ones I got. But if I ever get that encounter with a 180"+ it might change my mind.

Next time he's getting a truck ride!

I had a fun hunt this morning. Sat on the edge of a corn field that had been half harvested yesterday and they were going to finish today. Saw two fawns at 35 yards 20 min after shooting light, then had a basket 8 pointer loop around me at 35 yards and later a spike walk right under me. I'm waiting for something bigger at this point since I have a doe in the freezer. I did catch a quick look at what I think was a bigger buck just as he exited the corn into the woods about 100 yards away. He looked like he was on a mission though. I tried grunting at him but he never came around. The spike that passed under my tree ended up getting shot by my buddy which was nice since he hasn't shot a deer with a bow for many years. I was really happy for him (plus I get dibs on the best buck spot now for the rut hunts ).Screenshot_20241026-192755.png

Bumped 3 little, ladies I'm pretty sure, really early today. Probably 12:30 -12:45. Wandered a bunch, not extra fruitful. Wound up on a good trail, I think the ones I bumped evacuated on, over a scrape. Good thing is I had it marked on the map so that's cool. Had interesting noises the last 45 minutes. 2 dinks, same as I bumped I think, showed up 8 minutes late. Too dark, late so no go anyway, but such little ones I couldn't convince myself I'd shoot if I could. Not sure if I'm bummed or proud to have standards, lol.

All in all a good day on new ground. Keep grinding for this guy. Good enough day I'm planning a try in the morning but if I'm not travking/dragging I'll be watching the Lions. :D

My knee is awful mad at me but it can kiss my backside. :p Sort of hate this but I'm probably following up with ortho Monday. I'm clearly stubborn and whatever they say will wait until there's meat in the freezer lol

Go Team 4!

If it's that bad, usually it's go now, or when your ready. Not gonna make it any worse. Sounds like your getting into some deer! Hope you can make it happen!

So, I decided at 5 this morning that I was going to hunt northern zone, where rifle season opened yesterday. So I rushed out the door with my rifle and got 5 min away before I realized I didn’t have the necessary blaze orange with me, so quickly shifted to another piece about 25 min from there that’s in southern zone (still bow season, no blaze req) that I’ve never been to. Turns out it’s much better for bird hunting. Tons of turkeys and pheasants, as well as geese flying over into a lake in the other side. Hunting for all those was going on around me until I decided to get out of there. On the way out I just said hi to a guy that was pheasant hunting with his dog. In the end, I got permission to hunt his apple orchard about 15 min away. I went over and scouted and not nearly as much sign as I hoped, but pretty cool spot, and a large new field adjacent to a corn field that I’m excited about. Turns out I’m not giving up hunting for golf just yet.

Well me and my son had a decent buck on the field in the last .5 hr. Pretty sure I saw him roaming around the woods earlier. Maybe checking some scrapes. Closest he got was 60 yards. Kinda think he knew we were there. But knew he was safe. The tree the ladder stand was in grew some or was just bigger than I remember. No way my strap for the platform I got to hang off the side would reach. Had to use the HTP rope I use to tie off the kids going up and down to make a strap to hold the platform up. Worked, and not a big deal since I wasn't planning on having to swing around and shot from it. Just holding me up helping him. Great time hunting with the kids. If we try to hunt that one again, I'll have to come up with something else. It was a lot of messing around dealing with a big tree like that. I see some more ladder stands back in my future for the kids I guess. On smaller trees I can hang my platform off the side if needed.

Packing up headed to TN for a training class at the TN Fire college. Sounds like a great trip! Jealous. Enjoy it!

How's the knee @Horn ?
Hey, thanks for asking!

It's been all over the place in the last 24 hours. I could barely get around yesterday. Like dreading going a few steps even. Took one step that hurt the back of it pretty bad but it felt much better after that. Then a different Doctor in a different health system gave me a prescription for the swelling that seems to be a miracle cure. 100% better today. It's great to be able to walk!

Hopefully one of you has some experience with this. I sort of shy away from morning hunts, in part because I just don't want to get up, but I also don't have set spots to go. I go scout around areas and decide where to set up, not usually going to this tree to climb because the deer will be right there.

How much wandering can I do in an area in the dark? How early do I have to do it to get away with it? Better off scouting in daylight and coming back in a few days? I've got a spot i want to try a morning sit in, it's a drive and I haven't been there in a year so I'm going to want to have a look around rather than just climb a tree and hope something comes within 90 feet of it.

Now that I think of it I haven't been there since the Sunday after time change last year. Got it late due to that and the deer showed but I was out of position. I was planning the set up a little off anyway but I was bumming I didn't get in the tree because I felt like I *might* have had a real chance vs getting caught on the ground when he was headed to bed

This time of year. Here is what I would do if I was gonna head into public with out a plan.
Pick what you think is gonna be a good area, or at least a spot you can see a long ways. Get close in the AM and watch for a while. If you see bucks moving thru a spot, or does cross an area. Slide over that way and set up. If your not seeing much, keep creeping. The bucks are waiting for the does to get to bed before they go Cruze. Keep an eye out for fresh smelly scrapes. That's what I would be looking for. You see a decent buck chasing a doe, you can bet there is another not to far behind.

It sounds like you already know a relatively specific area, but you are just unsure about what tree to get up in. In that case one thing I've done is get there before dark and just set up on the ground at the base of a tree in case a deer happens to wander by at shooting light. Then once it got light enough to see I slowly walked around to look for scrapes or other sign and good trees that I could climb. The one time I did this I was up in a tree within a half hour of shooting light overlooking a scrape. (of course I didn't end up seeing any bucks that day, but I felt like I was in a good spot all day).
