Team 6!

Really wanted to get some points but it’s early enough and this young buck needs to grow! Was fun to watch him though.

Had a beautiful opening weekend here in Virginia, best weather for the opener in quite some time. My back issues forced me out of the saddle about 4 hours into my first sit of the year Saturday AM, I was way too fidgety in it with the pain and got busted by some nice does that would have ended up right under my tree. Spent the rest of the morning and the evening sitting on the ground. Saw a coyote and some turkeys from a distance but no more deer until I was walking out this morning. Spooked two deer out of their bed but they didn't know what I was. Tried to put a stalk on them and had a blast doing it but failed to get into shooting range as they slowly walked away from me. Tried a fawn bleat and slowed them up for a second... Had a clear look at one but she was about 50 yards up the drainage from me.

Hope you all enjoyed your weekend, I know I did. Felt great to be in the woods again and even though it didn't go as I planned I had a blast. I will be back at em this weekend and plan on working on finding that sweet spot in my saddle to get as comfortable as possible.

Good stuff @EverettJ89 !!

It was a fun opening weekend for me as well. Seen 3 does Thursday but never got close enough for a shot. Friday had to leave the woods at 2 for a wedding without seeing a deer. Went with a friend Saturday who shot a small 8 pointer even though I didnt see anything. It was great and I really enjoyed saddle hunting and not saddle practicing. Learned a lot of things I need to get better at as far as how I need to pack my bag, etc. That was a headache.
Got beat to my spots Thursday and Friday which was disappointing. Met 3 different hunters and had good conversations though. All 3 were very generous and willing to help a Public noob. 2 even told me where they were seeing deer at but I told them they did the scouting I would feel guilty to shoot anything in their spot. I dont know, just didnt seem right.
Overall a great new experience for me.
Hope you all had a great weekend and hope we all stay safe hanging from a rope....in a good way.

Got to the public access with plenty of time to kill. Walked slowly down my access. As I crest the ridge heading down to the swampy creek bottom I was planning to hunt, I see 2 headlamps pushing through the bottom. I turned around and set up a little closer to the truck. At this point I didn't have time to push into my spot 2 miles back. Had 3 doe at 10 yards 30 minutes before legal shooting light. And so goes the public land blues. At least it was a nice sunrise this morning.

Dang. Sorry to hear that. At least you got to enjoy being in a tree I guess.

Hope you guys get to be in a tree this weekend. Not sure if I will be rained out or not with Delta moving in.

My hunt tonight was a total S-show.

A word of advice to the team, don't do what I did tonight and walk 1.25 miles in, stop to get situated before engaging ninja mode, and realize you're an idiot - left my dang release in the dang truck.

I swore I would never have that happen to me, this being my first year bow hunting I've heard a lot of guys having been in my position... is this a right of passage?

I then pushed through what I thought was a small mountain laurel thicket, it was not small and walking around would have been wise, but I was rushing. There was a ton of fresh bear scat in there, might be going back to tag a bear later in the year.

So yeah tonight was a **** show

Happens to the best of us. I’ve been hunting for 20 years and lost track of my release last season on a November 7th hunt in a spot i had saved for this time period. Trust me my ears were steaming. Eventually found it but not before walking back to the truck and searching for it and creating twice the disturbance. But honestly those are the hunts where you usually kill one for some reason. I passed a nice looking young buck that morning at the base of my tree. Always something that goes south, it’s how you respond after that that makes the man. It’s all about not letting yourself make a similar mistake again. You have to learn many things the hard way in this sport. Good luck and keep grinding! It’s a marathon not a sprint.

Definitely happened to me before!! Mine was left at home though. I have an old one in my pack at all times as a back up now.
