Team #7

I'm down in MD for a couple days kicking off my season. Largely a scouting mission. Covered a lot of new ground.

Found a few bucks but nothing seen from the tree but except 2 bears. Bears freaking everywhere down here.

Also got between mama and cub walking out last night, saw the cub 15 feet away at eye level. That woke me up.

Just got set up for the evening sit. I sat corn last night, tonight I moved back closer to bedding.

Good to be dirtbagging it again. Haven't done this in awhile. Sleeping in the back of the truck and scouting hunting all day. Just a quick jaunt down here then next week is our opener. I'll be back down here at some point in the rut, I bought the tag, gotta try to use it.

Do deer eat beechnuts? I don't encounter them much at home. Opened a couple up and there's nothing to them.

Haven't found any white oaks producing. Corn and browse seem to be the game right now here. Reds have nuts for later in the year.

In fact, they prefer them over oaks, just not as plenty
I have a spot with beech and grapes? I think someone told me they hit beech when the leaves change? They were devouring the grapes. There is also ash and maybe witch hazel in that spot. Good trail so I'm thinking it's worth a try, just not sure of timing, thinking early?

Food and sign. Sounds like a hot spot

Well , how'd the hunts go? @elk yinzer , @BTaylor ?

Another week to go here. I plan on being in my saddle this time next week! Although it's probably too dark at the moment

I never saw a deer from the tree.

Back at it this weekend for the home opener in PA. I've done zero scouting here since April. I'll be alright but the first few weeks of my season are mostly scouting for the rut.

I got out this evening, saw 3 doe but I was hunting for a buck here. I'll get off early enough every day this week that I'll get a few sits in this week.

Hunted Saturday morning and evening in different spots. Saw 6 skwerls total. The spot I hunted Saturday morning I was trying to catch em moving back to bedding from a destination food source and pressed my luck with the wind and thermals if they were already back in bedding before daylight. They were. Had a doe try to come in from the bedding area about 8:15 and she winded me at about 80 yards, couldnt see her but know where she was from the 12-15 snorts before she finally left. Put the whole Atsco sport wash and ozone clothes treatment to the test, it failed. The afternoon hunt it was 90 degrees when I went in and the barometer was 29.60. Didnt have high hopes but was tucked in really close to a different bedding area so thought I might catch some right at dark movement. No dice. Rained out Sunday. Not going to complain about that because we need it bad. Did get to go look at a new chunk of private ground mid-day Saturday that my buddies cousin bought and we can hunt. We already knew it had some good bucks on it from riding the roads glassing during the past few summers. Made a big loop around the edges and then slipped in fairly close to the primary suspected bedding area and found a spot where they are hitting some white oaks as the birds and skwerls knock some out. That spot also had a half dozen rubs and 5 fresh scrapes. 2 of the scrapes were truck hood size. Picked a tree and hung a cam there.

Take it you were in Western MD? I haven't been out there for a few months but here in Central MD oaks are raining

Yep, beautiful country. I've done a little scouting down there the past couple years but it was my first foray in season. Tough hunting, steep hills, exactly the kind of hunting I dig. It's a long term play for me, the hunting isn't great, but it's the easiest out of state hunting I can get to.

Just about all the red oaks are loaded, it's dangerous to stand under one for long. Chestnut oaks were hit or miss. I was largely looking for a hot white oak stand, but didn't find any that got me excited. Where I was finding the most sign, they were hammering the corn in the area.

Beautiful country for sure. The problem with hunting the corn is the bears like to be there too, as you found out lol. I've never hunted out there but I've scouted a good bit and am out towards Deep Creek Lake several times a year. Deer, turkey, and bear all abundant around that area.

Random thought in conversation with a good friend.

Good form makes for good shots and good shots make for short tracking jobs

Hopefully I'll be hearing about and sharing stories of good shoots and short tracking :)

T-minus 5 days...

Gonna be a little warm (96 here today, low 90's this weekend) but the moon is going to be right and no rain in the forecast. Who is getting after 'em this weekend?

Planning on going out Sunday night, probably going to skip the morning because I'll be camping
