Team #7

Was hoping to get out today but 2nd year in a row getting the flu Chistmas week. Cold front after 3 days of rain, this morning should be fire. Kids were sick now I have it. Took a break to do some trapping last week, that was fun, but ready to get back in the trees. I just like it up in the canopy. Just not my year though. Getting to the point I only see a few more possible hunting days on the calendar.
It's going around bad. Agreed on just being in a tree. Just where I belong lol. Stay after it. It only takes a few seconds to feel that rush of adrenaline and like the whole season was worth it.

Ive been waiting for the rain water to recede. My oak flats are now goose grounds.

Christmas week duck report for the state said we are well over 200k mallards below the avg for the same week of the season year over year. All the rivers are as low or nearly as low as I ever remember seeing them. Wont be able to eat the fish cause they all got lyme disease from being covered in ticks. If it rained an inch a day for the next 15 days I dont think there would be enough water in the places I hunt to set a half dozen decoys. And he has canada's in the timber. SMH

Saw 2 deer, and 2 hogs. Almost killed one hog, each time I got him to stop for a shot, it was behind some trash or a tree. Oh well....

I did find some really good sign, but wind would of never worked for it, so I just moved on and kept scouting, wind should be right for it on Sunday, so I'll try it then.

You ain't kidding, I've complained for the last several years having to hunt around flooded timber for deer and wearing waders, but man with it so dry the deer are really spaced out, and because of the lack of water and ducks theres SO MANY more people deer hunting this year its ridiculous how much pressure theres been in my hunting areas. Even still today, there was 5 trucks down there, last year I never saw another person after mid December, much less Christmas.

I’ll be out around 10am tomorrow. Plan to scout around til I find something worth setting up on and then spending the rest of my day there. Wednesday’s my birthday and I plan on taking my dog for his first squirrel hunt

Deer is over for me. I really struggled with motivation the last 2-3 weeks. Good luck to everyone with season left!

I'm switching gears to small game just for fun and looking forward to some fishing this year

I've got one sit left this coming weekend, spent this whole weekend gutting and redoing our bathroom, got a few small things to finish up this week/weekend and gonna put my last hunt in probably Sunday night

I’m hanging now. Scouted some this morning and found some good looking stuff that should be great in early season. Right now I’m thinking all the action there is at night. Found a dead head unfortunately. Drove to a different spot and walked a long ways. Got to where I thought would be good, came over the hill, tails everywhere. 12-15+. At least one good one. Lots of little bucks. They had no idea what happened and only ran 100 or so yards before settling down. I tried to cut a little distance off whenever the wind blew until I found a good tree if they retrace their steps. Watched a couple bed and a couple spar as I quietly got dressed at the base of my tree. Climbed as quiet as I could. We’ll see if they come back

Can see at least 1 bedded about 110 away so hopefully the rest are near by. This erratic wine might screw me before the nights over though

Nothing dead but felt like I was in Iowa tonight. The whole time I was in the tree I had eyes on deer which was exciting enough. About 3:25 the squirrels started coming out of the trees and it felt like magic was about to happen. Not 5 mins later all the deer were on their feet. They were in 0 hurry to go anywhere though. Turned out they all were bedded between 75 and 125 yards of me. I feel pretty good just in the fact I was able to get up a tree in broad daylight in winter with no leaf cover and none of them saw me. A doe was the closest and she was shaving 5 yards every 10 mins. I was looking to the right of my tree as she finally started to more rapidly cut distance and knew I needed to get to the left of my tree. I marked the double trunk tree she walked behind as I switched positions and tried to reacquire her tree. Couldn’t find her anywhere. Im looking and looking. Go to get my binos up, look to the left some more, oh Sh!t there’s another double tree, oh Sh!t there’s the doe staring me down. I was able to be still enough after that that she never figured me out but she knew something wasn’t right. Im convinced they all would have come right back to me. Instead, I got to watch at least 3 does and 9 bucks meander back and forth, spar, posture, and feed for the next hour and a half at about 50 yards. Got to see some dreamy bucks I’ll post below and these pictures don’t do them any justice at all (3 are a beautiful 10 that had a giant body. 1 is an awesome 8). They had way more mass in person. Gotta be one of my favorite hunts ever not counting ones with my kids. I put a cam up so hopefully I can get a pattern and maybe get back out this year.
