Team #7

Nothing dead but felt like I was in Iowa tonight. The whole time I was in the tree I had eyes on deer which was exciting enough. About 3:25 the squirrels started coming out of the trees and it felt like magic was about to happen. Not 5 mins later all the deer were on their feet. They were in 0 hurry to go anywhere though. Turned out they all were bedded between 75 and 125 yards of me. I feel pretty good just in the fact I was able to get up a tree in broad daylight in winter with no leaf cover and none of them saw me. A doe was the closest and she was shaving 5 yards every 10 mins. I was looking to the right of my tree as she finally started to more rapidly cut distance and knew I needed to get to the left of my tree. I marked the double trunk tree she walked behind as I switched positions and tried to reacquire her tree. Couldn’t find her anywhere. Im looking and looking. Go to get my binos up, look to the left some more, oh Sh!t there’s another double tree, oh Sh!t there’s the doe staring me down. I was able to be still enough after that that she never figured me out but she knew something wasn’t right. Im convinced they all would have come right back to me. Instead, I got to watch at least 3 does and 9 bucks meander back and forth, spar, posture, and feed for the next hour and a half at about 50 yards. Got to see some dreamy bucks I’ll post below and these pictures don’t do them any justice at all (3 are a beautiful 10 that had a giant body. 1 is an awesome 8). They had way more mass in person. Gotta be one of my favorite hunts ever not counting ones with my kids. I put a cam up so hopefully I can get a pattern and maybe get back out this year.

Getting up a tree with in 100 yards of deer anytime of year is an accomplishment. Well done, hoping to see some better pictures of one of those brutes soon.

Y'all know where this guy was all year? Shoot. 3 days late. The trail that camera is on looks like a 3 lane highway. You think I got anything better than a spike in the last 6 or more weeks there? Nope, negative. Lol might as well laugh it off. A tiny 7 point followed behind him

My experience has been exactly that. Usually the insane trails aren’t the ones big bucks are on. If you can find a less worn trail that parallels one of the high ways, that’s where the big ones are. Unless it’s a rut, then they’re trying to perpendicular several of the highways at once if that makes any sense

First day after my hunt I got this guy in there. Not the giant but a solid deer. I doubt I get back there to hunt this year but who knows. Pretty sure it was the group of bucks (minus a few) that I saw as a bachelor group this summer. I’ve got a much better idea of how they’re traveling now that should hold pretty consistent next year

This cam was hung 9/20. This deer showed up 12/14. 1400ish deer pics before he showed. Best 2 deer on that cam both showed up in mid December. The other 7-8 bucks were all 1.5-2.5 dinks.

Highly probable :) . I saw him from the tree there a few weeks before but didnt get his pic until mid Dec. That morning the closest he got was about 50 yards. In that pic he is 17-18 from the tree I was a hanging.

good. SO many real deer killers on private talk about deer coming back to their properties on the EXACT SAME DAY from year to year. enough peeps that i actually believe it. since im mostly public hunter, its not applicable, but for you ...

i would encourage all that hunt private to keep notes by date and refer back each year.

Opening day the previous 2 seasons the best deer on the farm showed up in daylight on the same small kill plot. My buddy went to hunt him there this year and he no showed. I dont think he ever showed there this year. 60% of the time it works all the time. If they do the timber cut I marked in that area, that tree will get really good.

Hunted there, at the farm not just that tree, I think 4 weekends, the rest of the season was on public.

I've seen plenty of bucks show in an area within days of the previous year on public and private, never exact day, but with 2-4 days and 3-4 years in a row. They definitely have quite the eternal clock.

Don't discount the possibility on public too

Who's still getting out? We've got 40 days to pad our lead or get it taken from us. I'm hoping to get at least one more sit. Possibly 2 before I'm done.

interesting. i need to keep that in mind.

on my public, they plant stuff and change what/where they plant drastically which shifts the herd (bedding and feeding). my MO is to find what/where they planted in late summer and start looking for fresh sign and put up a few cameras for inventory. during season, i scout for a few hours and then hang where i scouted a few days ago. rinse and repeat. i just hunt fresh sign. i'll try to keep better notes this year but i'm a little skeptical for my situation.

has anyone noticed this using notes or cameras on public?

Today is our anniversary so staying home this weekend and next weekend is my wife's 50th birthday and we will be going to Memphis for that to celebrate with family. The following 2 weekends I plan to be in the woods.

If primary food is moving from year to year is bedding also changing or just direction of travel to the food?

bedding moves also. i bet if crop X was in field Y, then bedding is at location Z each time this happens. at least for does. i dont have the notes for that. shame on me
