Tethrd Rope + Hand Climber: BEWARE!

I tried out the Tethrd tether in my gym by hitching it to my pull up bar to see how it felt.

I use the LW Hand Climber, so I simulated the action of raising the Ropeman 1 as I climb and the ropeman did not always grab right away. Sometimes it would slide a few inches before catching.

The effect seemed most pronounced close to the splice, so when on a tree this section of the rope won't be available. Still it happened occasionally on any part of the rope.

I have been using the HSS tether and this has never happened with it. Neither did I experience this when I was using a smaller tether and the Kong Duck.

For what it's worth, I milked the tether. No idea if this would make this effect more or less pronounced.

I tried it with a Williams carabiner and an Ascent Lite. If anything, it was worse with the Ascent Lite.

The tether and Ropeman seem to work fine the way most people here use it. That is it grabs fine when making small, relatively slow, adjustments.

Bit of a bummer if I can't use the Tethrd tether, so I will also try this with the Kong Duck and see.

Uh oh. I specifically ordered the Tethrd tethr and lineman's belts because of the spliced eyes. I use ropeman 1's on tethr and lineman's, but haven't been up in the tree with them yet. Will for sure be testing this on the ground before up in a tree. Thats scary, thanks for the heads up, I was going to head out tomorrow and use the ropes.

Pics and/or video would be a good idea in a situation where you're posting something potentially injurious to somebody's product/service.

Is it slipping on the portion of rope where the splice is buried? In that case the rope is probably too thick for the ropeman to catch. Ropeman 1 is rated 10-13 mm, and those Tethered ropes are pretty girthy to begin with, I wanna say 1/2 inch which is 12.7 mm. IRL when you are girthing around a tree, I can't see that ever being a concern.

That's what I thought at first, but I had a few times it happened away from the splice.

The ropeman1 takes an inch or 2 to catch on that rope. Much better after milking the rope but yea it still happens.

I had it happen with Yale bandit and a brand new ropeman last year. Had to put a little pressure on the ropeman to get it to grab. Hasn’t happened since. They were both brand new at the time. Once it started grabbing it was solid but I could hold the carabiner and move it back and forth in the rope

Use a Shizll with a tending hitch like a Distel no worries

No issues on my Tethrd linesman belt with a ropeman 1. Don’t know how I ever did without it

Dunno if I’d like it for the tether. Shizlls are cool though

I am using it on both the tether and lineman. I set them up for last weekends hunt they work great. No worries a put mechanical failure or chewing up the rope or having to milk the rope down

If you dont feel comfortable doing a splice you can always choose your rope from wesspur and have iron street do the splices they do some of the finest work around.(you may pay more but the craftsmanship and peace of mind is worth it in my book.
