Just curious, saw one of Jason's latest video and his arrow look REALLY slow.

From what I understand he shoots about 55lbs with a heavy arrows.

But from 28 yards, that look really slow. I'm not an expert in FPS or anything but that look less than 100 fps. I expected an arch but here is no zip to that arrow at all.

Yes, I know speed is not the name of the game with it come to traditional bows. But to be honest, looking at that arrow fly make me a little nervous.

Video at 4 min mark.

So is it just me? Is it the angle of the camera that making it look slow? Or does it look accurate but I dont see that from the shooter's view.

I'm pretty sure its the camera angle and the fact the video is trying to highlight the "volley" of the arrow in flight. Speed wood look different from the side view. The shot release to impact seems about the right timing for a trad bow.

Hmm... that is interesting then. So on that note, do you shoot expecting the deer to jump the strings? From that speed I can imagine a deer ducking completely under that arrow flying at that speed.

Usually when I shoot at a deer I aim for the bottom 1/3 of the killzone, best case heart shot, second case lungs, and worst case spine shot. However most of us that shoot trad prefer much shorter shots...around 10-15 preferable for me, this closes the gap on how much time they have to react to the shot and obviously more penetration.....imo

He has admitted for years that his setup is very slow. In some of his videos he jokes about being able to run and beat the arrow to the target. He doesn't care about speed.

Heavy arrows significantly quiet down the shot which in theory should help a bit to minimize the deers reaction. As with most things in archery, everything is a tradeoff and in the heavy arrow/speed equation you have to land where you think is best for your hunting situations.
