The “Missing Link” Pack ... “If Only...”

It is my primary pack for saddle hunting and was purchased specifically for that very thing. A lot of my hunting is done on large public ground areas and hunting further than a mile from the truck is very common. For that reason I want a pack that I can field quarter and haul most deer out in one trip. I do not take the waist belt off for that reason. Not sure about removing the frame. I do wear it all the way up the tree and hang it once up. It is a non-issue in the tree. The material is not as loud as x-pac but it is certainly not fleece either. I do not carry much gear to the tree so I seldom have a reason to touch the pack once I am set for the hunt so the material is pretty much a non-issue as well. The pack wears very nicely and the way the strap system is configured there is an absurd number of ways to secure gear.

What’s yours process for carrying you sticks and platform with the 1800?

The pack has movable compression straps and I use those to attach the platform and my stick to the outside of the pack. The compression straps can be configured more ways than I care to count. It is a very versatile and well laid out pack imo.

I do like a backpack for my already setup treestands because i can bring a lot of stuff.

As far as saddle hunting, i saddle hunt only so i can hit many different stands, or stands that are very far away from the truck.

So i use Cranford steps, Method saddle, and a Filson Tin Game Bag. https://www.filson.com/hunting/apparel/tin-game-bag.html

I carry my steps in the front, wear the saddle, ropes and other gear in game bag. Done deal.

More fanny/lumbar action

Just picked up a Bison Gear Lost River on classifieds. I think its going to be a winner. Quiet material. Hidden expandable game bag if I ever pack out meat. 4 pockets total (main, 2 sides and 1 front). Lashing straps on top and bottom. Horizontal compression for sticks and carries really well. Apparently Western hunters use it all the time with any external frame to haul meat. My only concerns for AL hunting is wool in the early season and the fact that it approaches 5lbs empty. Luckily the suspension and fit its hard to tell its that heavy.

I have an eberlestock tailhook onthe way. Had one in the past, but wanted to try it again for carrying sticks. We will see.

Cabelas whitetail fanny pack (no shoulder straps). Perfect for light loads using in conjunction with a climber.

Badlands Monster is for sale in classifieds as it wasn't going to work but mainly ,as you might be able to tell, I have too many fanny packs for one grown manly man.

For a straight backpack I will go with the Tarahumara...always. Just can't find one that beats it other than an Umlindi, but 30L is just too big for hunting a mile from the truck. Maybe if I were packing out meat.

Taste in packs is more personal than taste in women.

I want to see a western pack company marry their suspension to a 15 x 25 ish treestand serving as the frame. That would bastardize the saddle fad pretty quick-like.

I want to see more pop-up style frames and bag options made of saddle cloth and fleece

I'm sure it'll be like trucks and we'll have touchscreens and integrated phone chargers first because no one knows how to polish turds like modern day 'Merica.

Before I saddle hunted I strapped my millenium to a kuiu ultra frame and left it right on the bottom of my stand and strapped a stuff sack and sticks to it for hang and hunts.

Hey, I'm torn between a Tarahumara and a Venture 1800.

I've got 4 mini Hawk sticks and a Scout platform. How does the Tara do hauling sticks?

Edit: any pics of your setup?

I currently have the pop up 18 and really like it. It would be perfect for me if it was made with fleece or a quieter material than cordura.
This^! I swear it would be quieter to eat potato chips with a megaphone in front of your face than open that bag on a still morning.

I have the Pop Up 28 and really love it aside from the ungodly noisy fabric and it really needs a few more pockets for the little odds and ends.

Here is a side view. All the hill people stuff is top notch and very modular.

Nice. What do you do for organization? I know a lot of people just stuff it with smaller bags and some use the Tara insert

Have the Tara insert, the HPG 58 pouch and a kifaru chamber pocket. I use a kifaru pullout for small things to keep together like my emergency rappel kit.

added a organizer to the top of the pack for access on the tree. Usually don’t have to get in the bag, but if I do the organizer just flips up for access. Used to have a tuff possum pocket that fit the Tara, but my daughter made off with it. Bottom is a mini pod from pocket up.net to keep my leafy suit, stake blind and/or rain gear as needed.

I continue to be impressed with the Hill People Gear Connor. The new version is compatible with a hip belt, which I imagine is even more comfortable.

Another shot of the Connor at work. It’s really just the next size up from the Tara for any of you that are interested. Sticks are 24” for reference, and no, I don’t always carry six sticks.

A lot depends of what you plan to do. I hunt whitetail in the midwest, and I’m not packing miles into remote wilderness to hunt and carry out meat. I get the one trip in and pack meat out thing, but I think I would likely go back in to get my animal depending on where it was. But for my typical hunt, I am on 80-500 acres, and I can usually park within a 1/2 mile to where I hunt. I’m looking for a pack to haul essentials, maybe sticks and a platform. Now I mostly one stick, so my pack needs are changing. I have tried many many packs. My key requirement or wants in a pack are:
- dead silent material. Most of the quality packs made are being made out of materials for hikers and climbers. Or for hunters out west Where noise isn’t so important but durability is. They are so load it makes them useless for hunting whitetail. Probably the quietest material is fleece. Sitka has the closest thing to a dead silent pack that I have seen.
- exterior pockets and/or molle loops. I’m not sure what happened to hunting pack design, but it’s like everyone went for the sleek no exterior pocket look. I think several exterior pockets are key. I don’t want to have to open the main compartment for essentials like a bow hook, range finder, mono, calls or wind detector. I want those readily available on the outside of the pack. I want the main compartment for clothing, water or other less frequently accessed items.
- Lightweight and reduced bulk. I basically want a day pack. No heavy cumbersome frame, no bulky waist belt which I find difficult when in a tree. I want more minimalist and am always looking for lighter smaller that gets the job done. I guess for those that are packing miles in and plan to carry a carcass, I could see needing a framed pack. But for most midwestern white tail hunting, I feel it’s overkill. Again, a pack should be based on need and intended uses.

I have used multiple brands, badlands, eberlestock, cabelas extreme Series, many lesser packs and am currently using the Sitka tool bucket 2019 version. The newer one has more waist belt, framing and some other features. I’m considering moving to the all fleece sitka backpack, probably the most silent pack made at this time.

New version of the pop-up 18 with the improvements that went into the 28 & 38 (pole style, changed location of the buckles, etc),
using a quieter fabric.

Additionally,
Main pocket layout like the mystery ranch hotshot on the interior maybe with fabic on the sides that holds pocket partly open keeping the contents from falling out, and the fusee stash pockets are good for things like saws, knives, kill kit, etc. I also prefer the non-elastic side bottle pockets like on the fire packs they are good dump pockets in the tree. Modify the tool/flagging buckle strap on the top of the yoke to better hold bows and firearms and the front admin pocket act as a compressible shelf/pocket for the bottom of the bow/firearm.

beautiful.

basically if my pre-calfire verison MR hotshot had a meat shelf and was camo it would be darn near perfect. the rigid bottom were the fire shelter is normally attached holds sticks better than any other pack I've tried. Lumbar packs are also far better than backpacks off trail, basically snagless if you can duck under it you'll make it under unlike a backpack.

I only ask that if someone takes this idea that I get one for free. Also, if you can sew and and want to team up and iron this thing out I'm down.

this on a pop-up frame or made to attach to a frame pack like the F1or M1 frame pack via molle/pals would be a great spot and stalk western bag or a eastern whitetail/tree stand bag. using the molle that would attach it to a frame pack to attach it to a hip belt and shoulder straps it could also be lighter, non-meat hauler for the folks not interested in that feature.

Platform pocket large enough to fit larger platforms like the ambush, predator XL, OOAL, TL mission, etc sideways, but not so deep that the predator disappears from reach. For non-saddle hunting or non-platform hunters this is a large hydration pocket this way your still marketing to a large audience.

Lid when opened via buckles near back (lid zippered on both sides)

Lid attached to shoulder harness if you prefer (adding more padding for your bow if you strap it to your pack, no straps shown, boxes are easy to whip up in cad straps and zippers are annoying)

Main pocket opened (colored squares are sleeve style pockets)

With the lid removed for a lighter/early season setup.

frame and light padding slighty below pack to reduce sway and butt getting hit by sticks like the fire shelter on the fire pack series fix, should aid in strapping down sticks, tripods, etc as the straps are pulling into two panels as opposed to just the bottom panel.

Not that i have been thinking about the prefect bag for a while or anything, my wife has a purse problem and it's cheaper then my pack problem by a lot...

Mystery ranch, eberlestock, stika, Kuiu, stone glacier, exo, badlands, horn hunter, alps outdoorz, @DanO, tethrd, I am remotely available to help design/inspire packs. I come from a long line of industries that requires packs; combat medic/military, ems, backcounty ranger, LE ranger, wildland fire, citizen that travels quite a bit...please help me and my habit of searching for the perfect pack...I have a (enjoyable, healthy) expensive problem...in fact I have a discontinued hunting bag inspired by fire packs shipping now, and its not a pop-up 18 but if you have one in camo or foliage I'm interested. I really wish the 18 was still in the line up with the updates.
