I have peed in an established scrape and had a spike come through 30 minutes later and pee all over the scrape. I have also peed while out getting game camera cards, deer walked in smelled the pee spot and bolted like I had shot him. For me while I am hunting there are so many variables against me, peeing in a bottle makes me feel better about not putting another smell I to the woods.

The mechanics of peeing out of a saddle are relatively straightforward. Just pivot to one side or the other and try not to hit leaves that will make a lot of noise and not hit a location where I will be lowering my bow. As to deer being frightened by pee smell, I have resolved that question to my satisfaction although I won't argue with anyone who has had different experiences. Early in my hunting I never peed near where I hunted thinking it would be the kiss of death for that hunt. Then one day I was hunting one of my prime buck spots that saw a lot of doe activity also. It was a very narrow draw of trees left as a streamside management zone amongst a sea of new growth pines. The gallon or so of coffee I had consumed a few hours prior wanted to begin its long journey toward the Atlantic Ocean and I just could not stand it any longer. After heeding the call of nature and breathing a huge sigh of relief I noticed a group of does coming off the top of the hill straight toward me. The lead doe, a big matriarch, came in and stood in the puddle and didn't spook. From that point on I have just let er rip when I need too.

I have since set up many a mock scrape with just regular pee or by carrying a rutty buck tarsal gland in a Ziplock, putting it in a scrape and then properly seasoning it with recycled coffee. I save and freeze all my buck tarsals and some doe tarsals for this very purpose. It seems to work pretty well.

My method for peeing is to turn and face away from the tree with my tether over my shoulder. This lets me get a good lean away from the tree. The lean is helpful in full cold weather gear to mitigate drippage onto clothes.

I purposely pee at the base of the tree I climb for that reason, I’ve had a buck in chase during the rut stop and bee line right to my pee spot before.

yup, but if you wanna go the "hammock" route slide your recliner under the knees and drop that tether to a low squat.

good call turning your back band into a make shift 2 panel saddle for emergency use

i wish more back bands had metal or cord/hitch connections and not the plastic hardware that is common

If this is serious, how do you handle cleanup. Both yourself and ground zero at the base of the tree?

Very serious, even witnessed by a game warden once lol. But for myself I used dude wipes (highly recommend) and what’s on the ground biodegrades as well as the wipes so I just leave it. Or if I’m feeling froggy I’ll bury it.

For Pee- on a ROS I just put one foot on a step and hang out to the side and let her rip.

Otherwise, Depending on what I ate the night before, I’m taking the save bet rappelling down and climbing back up when done lol

100% not needed. Just something extra to carry. I used to feel the same way. I changed my opinion 30 years ago after my mentor a killed a 6 pt that came to the base of the tree and ATE the leaves he just pizzed on 5 minutes before. Been letting r' rip ever since. It has no effect on the deer. However a pee bottle does make a nice natural handwarmer! LOL

I don’t do it because I’m scared of stepping on the tip
