"The official saddle hunting backpack thread"

thanks. i was curious. i like how that tool box opens up for access to the contents while in a tree.

Guys with MR packs, does this material quiet down at all with use? Bought a MR PU18 and the thing is as noisy as a screaming child out of the packaging.

A little bit as you break it in. Is it louder than I’d like? Yes. Would I get rid of it because of the noise? No.

I never hunted yet with this setup (just received my saddle) but here is my setup. I also own a badlands superday but this pack seems more comfortable with sticks and platform.

I guess if it isn’t broke... don’t fix it!
I have spent boocoo money trying to find the right pack. I have been using the voodoo tactical pack for the last 3 seasons, I have taken it to Canada twice, covered it with blood, loaded it till the zippers almost broke; I guess it has proven worthy. Im a huge badlands fan, but I cannot find a badlands pack to do what I need it to I guess it is out with the new. Hang on to the old.36EE0EFD-BB0C-4CF1-B65F-5E21748DBC47.png26A043EB-908D-437B-AA03-FE99B59FBCC7.png

Early season is a Horn Hunter G2.

Late season is a Eberlestock X2. Mainly to carry my First Lite Solitude coat and bibs.

I went cheap amazon pack, but fits my platform perfectly. Platform & fleece saddle inside, bow hanger top pocket, knee pads bottom pocket, extra clothing bottom strapping, sticks in Talons.

Hot damn what are those DIY sticks you for there CigB? You got a video or post on those?

These are LW’s cut to 23”, with double step on the top, bottom stop bolts have been trimmed to allow for v bracket swivel, top bolt replaced with 2 1/2” to allow for knob & turning capability, & stealth stripped. Running 7/64 daisy’s on them. Next week will be upgrading to Dan O’s tree brackets with countersunk channel to prevent top bolt from spinning.

Nothing as of yet still busy with real job, prototyping a new product, & season still open, but in the off-season my goal is to pump some content on the mobile hunting gear YouTube channel.

I recognized that I have been just spitting out that I like the a properly fitted frame pack, hunting in the hybrid, and one sticking or bolts as a climbing method, and a ring of steps over a platform without even thinking anymore. I know that can be dangerous, as I might be missing some new information, or different ways to do something. So I decided to try some things out the last several hunts to make sure I was thinking about things right. Some observations, as it relates to backpacks:

I "hunted" yesterday with a normal backpack(silent reaper). I carried kestrel, backband, tether, lineman's, kneepads, headlamp(and backup), granola bar, 1L of water, bow hanger, grunt tube, single shikar stick with one step aider, ridge runner platform, wool jacket, gloves for climbing, one trekking pole, and the hickory creek mini. I'm guessing the pack weighed between 15-18lbs.

I hiked 6 miles, over really steep hilly rough muddy slippery terrain. I had a bunch of hands and knees crawling through briars. Lots of tossing the crossbow up the hill to use both hands to climb. 1/2 mile in, my shoulders were already annoyed with the backpack. A mile in, I regretted the decision not to carry the popup. Halfway through, I debated just hunting where i was at because I did not feel like paying attention and looking for a good spot anymore. I had a little chat with myself and sucked it up. After all, its supposed to suck a little bit. I got into a spot I felt "ok" about, but I was running out of daylight, and it was the best I had come across. I found a tree, looked up, and thought about the effort of getting set up for the hour of shooting light left.

I ended up setting the platform at ground level, and hanging there. Two things were made very clear to me on this hunt: I will not carry anything besides a frame pack(or the hybrid) if there is ANY chance I'm walking further than half a mile. And the other is that I really, really like the hybrid. I had several days similar to this, and with the hybrid, I was eager to get up a tree with it.

Alright now go out with 3-4 sticks and do the same thing and report back please. Thanks Kyler!

That was the point of my post - I can carry 25-30lbs that distance with the frame pack and not even notice it there. I'll take carrying double the weight in the right pack all day over a pack with no load lifters, load shelf and hip belt.

No I hear ya. I’ve been carrying 3 heliums with just a backpack (no frame whatsoever) that has a hip belt and it’s been doing the job. Bought the pop up 18 to see what the hype is about, but since I don’t quarter out, I didn’t see it necessary. Maybe I’ll start quartering out if the pop up works out.

Edit: I should say that my only drawback I’ve seen with a frame is adding more bulk, but the pop up seems to be a smaller frame than others which I like.

I’m watching thoughts on the new Horn Hunter light from the 2020 ATA show. Looks very saddle friendly.

I have the Horn Hunter Full Curl Combo and really like it. I switched to that from a Eberlestock X2. My reason was I could take that extra center pack off and use it when I'm in the JX3 and days when I'm in the Flex I can use the full pack. So Items I need in both scenarios go in the removable center pack.
