The Shame Thread

Reading these posts wearing my thong sandals reminiscing on the 8 point I shot under twice at 20 yards then over 3 times at 35 yards all before 10am then climbing down to retrieve at least one arrow to finish the sit!

Just limped back to the launch on the trolling motor. About a 2 hour crawl.

Fuel line up to the filter so crammed wirh varnish you can't make fuel flow. Filter full of it. Seems to be clean on the line from the filter to carb, so that's nice

Ethanol only, and it gets used too much for me to suspect it sat too long. I think the culprit is the 20 year old hose that come with the motor. I assumed that since it was still new in the sealed bag it'd be fine.

I assume otherwise now, and deserve a ribbing

I've been ticketed for baiting dove, hen wood duck during teal season. (Not on purpose but still)

The worst shame for me, I stalked a bedded doe group during our holiday antleress gun season bout 8 years ago. Made the shot @ 75ish yards, in the clamor of the other 20 does in the group running and me racking the bolt, a yearling had stopped in the same position as the doe I just shot. My first thought was,"crap I missed, shoot it again." Bam deer goes down. Walking up to the yearling I just killed thinking it was the doe, I look over to see the actual doe I had perfectly hit on the first shot dead 30 yards from (most likely) her now dead fawn. Felt absolutely terrible about that one. Perfectly legal (well, I didn't have orange on) but good god, put yourself together man.

I was so tunnel visioned on not forgetting gloves, face mask, hot hands, wool sock and the such, that one freezing cold morning i drove an hour to my hunting spot and realized that i’d left my rifle at home.
One season i was pretty stressed at work. Day before gun season I was pounding out this quote to get to the customer. Next morning I was excited to go hunting. But left my gun at home. I was about 10mins away when I realized it. Went back to get it. Missed a chip shot a small doe that morning.

Ethanol is the worst. I never run it through anything with a carb. How was the motor running before it stranded you ? With that much trash in the filter I would assume there is more in the carb.

Speaking of shame....I meant to type ethanol-free. I'm getting smooth-brained in my middle age.

Motor has always run like a cracked-out greyhound. 2002 but I bought it back in early spring still in the box. So it's new. Small 3 gallon tank and I run it frequently and only put gas for the boat in that tank so it never sits long. It may have had some ethanol in it at some point if I wasn't thinking and just pumped regular, but it's never knowingly had ethanol in it.

Long story short, the internal liner in the old fuel line had deteriorated and that's what I was thinking was varnish. Tank was clean and everything on the carb side of the filter was clean. I replaced the bulb, line, and fittings, filled up the tank, and it was back to running like a kid with scissors.

But it kills me that I let that be an issue. I put a new impeller in it because I didn't trust old rubber. Should have bought a new fuel line day 1.

My boat gets a new fuel filter every year and new impeller every two years. Cheap insurance to avoid issues on the water. Glad you got it fixed and are back up and running.

Yep, i try to baby boat motors. If a car breaks down or your lawnmower won't crank that's whatever. If you're 4-5 miles back in the swamp at night with no signal...problemo.

This in your mud motor or did you get an outboard?

@swampsnyper called it. I made it 2 seasons with the mud motor before me and my wife got sick of it. I was sick of standing up to run it, and she was sick of the noise.

I sold it for about what I have in it thanks to issues importing the kits due to 'rona, and found a 9.9hp 2-stroke merc for an even grand. Weighs less, runs faster, makes less noise, and is more maneuverable for running limb lines.

They built the 9.9s and 15s with the same head. All I need is a $200 carb and I'd have a 15, which should be about perfect. Only weighs 70lbs and pushes me solo with gear about 20mph. The 15 I'd imagine would give me 2-4 more mph, or enough to maintain performance with a 2nd person

Nice. You getting the new carb then?

Eventually. I've got a list of boat stuff i want. Sarah and I have really got into fishing together. I like to go fast and explore, but she could care less. Trying to get stuff for both of us first. She wants some nice seats and carpet for her feet. Both of us kinda want a side-imaging fishfinder and a powerpole anchor for shallow water bream fishing.

There’s a nice 20hp 4 stroke Yamaha for sale on here, that’s what you need.

Elk yinzer has it in the classifieds. It’s a tall transom though.

I don’t know If it is a thing everywhere, but at my buddies hunting camp if you miss they cut your short tail. Or least they say your shirt should be cut,

I’ve heard that too but mine never got cut must be a northernPA thing?

Many, many years ago when I was a turkey hunting novice I was planning on having a buddy call for me so I bought a tag in his local area about an hour and half south of me. Well, before season arrived he took a job out of state and left me high and dry and stuck with a permit for a downstate area. Well, come opening day I load up all my gear and head out at 3:00 am to get down there before light so I can make the best of it. I get down there in plenty of time and take a short nap in the truck. As the sky starts to lighten I get dressed in my camo, put on my vest and dig out a few turkey loads. Then I go to grab the shotgun . . . wait . . . its not here. Crap, I drove an hour and a half to turkey hunt and don't have my shotgun! Where's the last place I had it? Last place I can remember for sure it was leaning against the front door frame at home. I must have forgotten to put it in the truck. Plenty PO'd at myself there's nothing I can do but pack up and head back.

An hour and half of completely foul mood driving later I finally arrive home. I unload my stuff and walk in the house. I turn to the door frame to collect the shotgun and . . . . crap . . . its not there either. Wait I know I had it in my hands this morning . . .how far can it be? A search of the house, no shotgun. Another search of the truck, no shotgun. Now I'm really confused. In my early morning stupor I can't remember what I did with the gun . . . . it has to be here somewhere doesn't it? I sit down and think.

Suddenly it occurs to me in a serious "OH CRAP" moment, I carried it out set it on the truck bed tonneau cover while I was loading my vest and camo in the back seat. In the dark I didn't notice it laying there before I headed out. I hop in the truck and start retracing my path south again scanning along the roadsides as I drive. About 10 miles down the highway there's a familiar shape half in the ditch, half on the shoulder. I stop and sure enough there sits my cased shotgun, unbelievably undamaged.

I still to this day can't believe my luck that a cased weapon went unnoticed sitting there alongside a busy highway for better than 4 hours.
