thin material that dampens sound the best?

I have some mesh sacks for my climbing steps.

I do not want to quiet my steps with tape and such.

I would just like the bag to block a little sound. But I don't want my bags bulky and heavy. Anything has to be better than mesh for quiet!

My first reaction is a medium fleece.

Is there anything else you think is light, durable, and might block sound a bit better than fleece (like a thin saddle cloth)?

Thanks - R

I use the fleece dump pouch from EWO for my platform steps and it muffles sound pretty good, I feel like fleece will do a better job of limiting sound than saddle cloth would, but I don't have any real experience with saddle cloth

PS....the pouches don't have to be pre-made. I want a specific size and configuration.

If I get a cloth suggestion, I'll either sew them or pay my sister-in-laws mom to do it (or maybe she'll do it for free).

yeah, the arrow traps in the fleece seems good....but I was thinking saddle cloth is more like a vapor barrier of sorts and might have good sound deadening

Alternative- when is the noise made? When you're adding steps to the bag? Then I don't think the material matter much because the top is open. When you're walking around? Seems like you may just need a tighter bag, what about adding a bungee or elastic band to compress the bag after the steps are in, so the steps can't shift around as much, or adding a clip/bag "belt" to cinch the bag bit smaller?

That said I'd think fleece or cowboy suede are most likely candidates for a material change as well

It's when I'm climbing.

I have 2 mesh pouches with 6 polymers steps in each (12 total) and one hanging off each side of my saddle. They hang out in my backpack while walking and don't make noise.

However, if I go to aluminum steps, I'll save almost 2 pounds and they pack down half the size. I will wrap my amsteel around each step, but there is still a chance of the metal hitting when I am climbing. The top will be open, but my intuition is that having the sides block a little more sound will also help.

But you got me thinking that if I designed my pouches to squeeze the steps together at all times that it would help while climbing also.

I just don't want to add 2 lbs of rubber coating/tape on my steps because that defeats the point. The polymer ones are already quiet enough (make a thud noise....never an issue....kinda like fake rattling antlers).

Some sort of pouch with internal dividers could work as well, a bit more fiddly to put the steps away when you need to slip each one into a separate sleeve/internal compartment but would make the walking/climbing dead silent.

Well if you're gonna use socks just use black or brown ones and leave em on the steps lol

Edit: and further tangent- the vet wrap on my steps does a pretty good job with noise, and isn't that heavy. Noisiest part is the buckle.
Yea i agree. i dont think adding vet tape is gonna change the weight much. certainly not 2 lbs. i have all mine taped and its not really a difference. maybe .5 oz for all 5 of em.

I used to be in procurement for an automotive OEM. Shoddy pads are the materials used to deaden sound. Can be purchased in a multitude of different thicknesses and such. Not sure the weight but they are made dense. Would make for great dividers if not the entire pouch. Probably best sound deadening material as it was engineered for that purpose, may or may not be any good for a saddle bag….

Another tangent…bandolier….baddest saddle hunter ever rocking a bandolier of steps each in their own little stretchy pouch!
