Thinking about a lever action

I read somewhere that some states allow straight walled cartridges out of rifles during shotgun season. This would add to the lever action argument, but only if you went with something other than 30-30.

Several new bolt actions in 350 legend. It’s a great straight walled deer cartridge.
The only reason to hunt with a lever action is because you want to.

I do have a 12 gauge 870. I have heard about swapping barrels out on it, but wasn’t sure if that was a viable option. Any opinions on that? Shooting some ducks in the AM and scouting/hunting in the PM with only swapping a barrel would be convenient.
I run a 870 with a rifled barrel.
I have never questioned a 150 yd shot .
And it has never given me a reason to

I have a lever action 30-30 and I really like it but for someone that lives in Mississippi I would really look at something you can use during the primitive season (I am from Louisiana and our rules are very similar).

Take a look at the 35 Whelen. I have the CVA Apex but you can look at the CVA Scout or maybe one of the Thompson Center rifles.
Single shot crack barrels are very accurate and my 35 Whelen is the gun I take when scouting. It just packs and carries better than a bolt gun.

I have an 870 that I swap out for a slug barrel. It all depends on what county I am hunting in.

I also have a 30-06 Winchester model 70. That is my go to gun in rifle country. I also have a Winchester Model 94 30-30 caliber. I put a scope on that last year.

Unless you pin the barrel of the 870, usually you will be shooting 2-3” groups at 100 yds.

A lever can do it, and if you want one that’s the best reason to get one. Enjoy.

Winchester’s have gotten expensive being made in Japan. Marlin a few years back were having quality issues from what I recall.

Thank you everyone. Still up in the air but will let y’all know what I decide on.

Do it. Do it.

I just ordered my 45-70 guide gun, because you know, I need it.

Now I have to get the reloading dies and order several hundred Missouri Bullet Company 405 grain hitek bullets :)

Merry Christmas to me.

I have the Mossberg 464 zombie edition.... It has 3 small rails to mount a light or whatever you want. No malfunctions and I don't have to worry about messing up any wood. Adjustable stock so the kids can shoot it too

Not a choice here I can argue with.. and that 45-70 Marlin killed some dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, 2 or 3 or 4.. no recoil either ( in the movie) made me laugh.. I will say I love me a 35 whelen, I have in a handi rifle but the CVA models should work too, saw a 35 whelen handi rifle on Gunbroker last week for $180.00, Traditions also makes one that I have read good reviews about, and they have in 45-70. 444 marlin and 450 bushmaster.. takes care off all your 150 yard needs.

Lever guns are cool. But there is no better deer killer in the eastern United States than a synthetic/stainless bolt-action .308.

I've hunted a lot with Winchesters and Marlins, and they are a competitive pain to load and unload, and that tubular magazine adds too much weight to the front of the barrel for me. They're expensive, trickier to disassemble for cleaning in my mind, and I'm not a fan of the usual caliber offerings.

Not trying to talk you out of one, because they're neat as heck. But from 20-200 yards, I'll take a short action bolt gun every time.
