Today's visit with the Man in Green

I got checked this year as well. First time in the last 18 years but I was in a bow only area during muzzle loader season. He was parked around the corner hiding watching for me to come out. Once I emerged he came out quickly but I was legal in my orange and carrying a bow. Very pleasant experience overall.

Thank your lucky stars he was “hiding watching for you to come out” because that’s infinitely better than coming in to check you during your hunt. And…..chances are great he simply being “polite” and letting you complete your hunt before checking you. Most are conscientious like that.

I put polite in quotes because it’s much safer for him to wait there instead of walking in on you.

For some reason many more wardens checking duck hunters will motor right in on top of you to check you. Not cool because ducks always seem to find that the best time to check your spread, lol.

In this instance when I talked to the CO on the phone he specifically said he'd wait until afternoon to investigate because he didn't want to screw up our hunt. I thought that was very considerate of him but I explained we were another 1/3 of mile back in and his investigation wouldn't affect our hunt.

It’s so much safer for them to wait. That’s what makes it so mind boggling when they show up in the woods. I’ve never had one come in the woods to check me deer hunting in SC (my dad had it happen once).

A rule they started a couple seasons ago here is a buck with antlers under 5 inches can be considered a doe....I don't know if they started that because of situations like this or not but it does help us as hunters not have mistakes like this....I've almost shot at deer that would have turned out to be not legal.

So...if u do kill an illegal deer what is the right course of action? Check it in/tag it, call the man/take to the check station and hope for the best I guess...maybe ur honesty will help u not loose ur hunting licence?
You are referring to the antlerless deer designation. It counts as one of your 2 doe allowances. I have only seen one guy “mistakenly shoot” an antlerless deer because our law requires the 3pts or 10” long main beam which is pretty easy to spot from bow distance or with a good powered scope. The guy that mistakenly shot the non legal deer, called it in. It was his first offense and if I remember correctly, they took his deer, he received a small fine and a summons to appear. Some FWC guys I have met probably would have just confiscated the meat and let him off with a warning but for whatever reason, this one did not.
I doubt they suspended his license on a first offense but those are the reasons people violate the other law (willing full waste of game) aka just leave it where it lies. I don’t know what I would do in that situation but it seems like a lose lose to me.

I've had great experiences with wardens and some that were very rude. There is currently one of the local federal that is one of the nicest men I have met in my lifetime. I like being able to talk to him and ask about vaguely worded items.

If you want to see a wild run in, check out Urbanbowman on instagram. They walked right into the woods aiming an AR style firearm at one of the archery hunters while the other was a little ways off recording the whole thing. This was on private land, they had permission to hunt, in VA.
