I think it really depends on what you are having done and to what extent it is torn. I had one repaired with incision and the other by arthroscopic. My wife, who is a Physical Therapist tells me that the rate of recurrence is much higher with arthroscopic. If you do the therapy and stretch it constantly it shouldn't be very bad. For the incision surgery, I was in a sling/immobilizer for 2 weeks I believe and was lifting weights within 4 months the arthro is much less. From what I understand the stretching and therapy is the Key. If you slack on that, you build scar tissue and the scar tissue is what causes the stiffness and lacking range of motion.
