Tree Hopper Crotch Rocket

Interesting potential here. Are the dimensions such, width wise, that you could slip that square tubing over a pair of Squirrel Steps after they've been buckled to a tree? The tree would have to be big enough so that the angles were right.

Yeah I don’t see why not. This platform only fits in sort of wider crotches to begin with. So should be plenty of room to get past small things sticking out like steps.

I've been looking at these and wondering if an aider hanging from bottom would make it easier to lock in and climb up on to?

I think that could work. To cam it in your really have to almost get on top of it and push it down. Might be a little more difficult to pull it down from below it with an aider but should work most of the time I would think.

Yeah makes sense. Good to know. Do you use yours a lot or just once in a while in the right setting?

Just on certain trees.

Think my point was missed. I mean would the geometry support installing two Squirrel Steps on a tree and then sliding the open ends of that tubular material over the Squirrel Steps thus creating a regular platform? I.e., not using it as a crotch platform but a regular platform.

Don't know... it may be that the leverage inflicted on the Squirrel Steps would be too great.

On mine the tubing is to small to go over the SS but I like where you are going!

Oh ok. I think I follow. I dunno about that. You would have to do some pretty heavy modifying and likely more welding to get it secure enough to hold and support like that. There is a solid base of aluminum not far into that aluminum tubing to hold the bolts for the hinge. Don’t think there’s as much room to play with there as you would think.

I don't understand why you would not just stand in the crotch. You are sitting in a saddle to support some weight. I don't need more things to carry, I need less.

Well, most tree crotches are too small for both my feet, and they tend to pinchmy foot pretty bad when I have tried. Your feet get pretty tired standing in one, this takes all the pressure off and gives you a flat spot in a tree that if the V is at the height you want to be, the other two branches of the trunk you otherwise be pretty crappy to setup off of.

What you said, and if you want to take a break you can sit down on the platform like a bench.

Go stand in the crotch of a tree for an hour or 2 then get back to us
If I'm standing 100% yes. If 75% sitting, 25% standing then no. I don't need to carry another chunk of metal. Maybe plywood would work? Hey, stuff a Dewalt tool bag in that crotch. There's a good idea.

Sorry, old thread I know but it fits. Mods move this is it fits better else where.

Did anyone ever try any of these ideas/mods? After a season do you like it or not and why?

Did anyone try mounting/ using it liked a normal platform?

I don’t see how that would work with this platform unless you did some heavy drilling/welding and added some major hardware to it. At that point you might be further ahead just getting a platform already built for the job.

It probably would be easier to buy something else, I'm just curious if any one did try it.

I'm also curious how people like them for their intended use. I see several areas that have plenty of trees it may work in. I'm thinking SRT up and leave my other platform at home. Other areas are a climbing stick paradise, full of nice straight generally limbless trees where the crotch rocket would, probably, be useless.

Gotcha. Yeah I’ve never heard of anyone who even bought a crotch rocket other than me. I don’t have many trees that it will work on but it works awesome on one big tree in my yard. So that’s mainly why I got it. I’m sure there’s others around it would work on too but haven’t taken the time to find them. It’s definitely a niche product. No pun intended.

I've got a couple of the older ones. Use them I apple trees and old narly oaks on the farm. They're legit.
