Are tree spurs allowed on public game lands? There is a You Tuber video of a saddle hunter utilizing tree spurs to climb. He went up the tree like a squirrel in about 3 minutes. In his video he states he's been doing it 35 years. Awesome to watch. I hunt private land so its a viable option for me. It eliminates allot of weight.

I think it depends entirely on the state and local rules. Most don’t allow them as far as I know.

And it can depend on who you ask. I have seen an email from AGFC that said you could use spurs on a particular WMA. I then asked the area manager and also separately asked an enforcement officer and both said absolutely not.

You would just need to check your state regulations. Most if not all federal land will prohibit them. On private just check with he owner and if you own it then it's up to you.

Yeah, that's kind of the problem with a lot of things. You get a lot of different answers. I would want it in writing from the head office of the state on their letterhead. Then if you were debating it with the manager or game warden then you could show them a copy.

There's been threads on this in the past trying to quantify the States that do and don't allow. The problem is it isn't that simple. For instance, MD State game lands don't have a restriction but, many WMA's that are also owned by the State do.

not legal in IN for sure but some still do it. i think general consensus is that its not good for the trees. arborist usually dont use them for trimming. only for falling.

In my experience that’s the case for sure in Arkansas, not allowed. I guess there could be exceptions for anything not owned by the state/federal but that’s obviously much less common here compared to some states.

I love using tree spurs I started with a set of steel kliens and they work great but they are heavy and then I’ve had some carbon fiber ones and a set of evoke aluminum spurs I will say out of all of them i have owned I got a pair of bashlins spurs and they are cheaper and just as light as the carbon fiber ones in my opinion

I send the AGFC an email every year confirming that they’re still legal, and they confirmed this summer that they still are.

Spurs are legal, but bolts/screws aren’t.

I’ve always gotten a clear answer on this, but have struggled to get a yes/no (even when asking about specific WMAs) on e bikes.

Do you care to post a screenshot of the email correspondence?

I think this is the same person that’s responded the last few years.
I’m not saying there aren’t officers that won’t argue it’s not legal, but I make sure I’ve got one of these responses each year to be safe.

I havent spoken to Ms. Cartwright but every other person with AGFC I have asked about this said spurs absolutely were not legal. I wouldnt be afraid to use them if I had that email on me. Might still be a pita if you get checked using them.

I keep it on me to be safe, but I’m not going to be upset if a warden checks me and tells me to leave them at home from now on.
I like them, but I really only use them in the bottoms where there are good limbless trees, so I can swap to a climber for those hunts.
