Trotlines

I repaired everything and yesterday I put out our 2nd set. My son and I checked after work and no damage or missing components. 1 single eater size. Caught a 12-14 inch crappie and a hand size red belly on the rod and reel..no pic unfortunately....practiced catch and release with those 2

Is that a bullhead

Went bait 50 hooks this afternoon. Put the bait that Sipsey sent me on every other hook next to chicken on one line until I ran out. Should give a fair comparison. We shall see in the morning.

Thanks, that’ll be a genuine test. Are you using any particular chicken parts?

I like to have skin on it. I’ve used legs, thighs, and breast. What ever is cheapest or available. I haven’t noticed any difference in bites. It stays on for days if it has skin and I’ve caught some on bait that was days old on the hook. But fresh is better.
I added koolaid to one pack of cut chicken but didn’t notice any difference in bites. I’ve heard to add garlic powder but haven’t tried that. Chicken works awesome by itself. It did better than cut bluegill.

Thats interesting. Ive used frogs, bird parts, deer meat and cooked hamburger, but never used chicken.

When I ran lines and jugs in high school I would always pick up a family size pack of pork chops from whatever grocery store meat department had them on sale. One or two pork chops would bait an entire line. Catfish seemed to love it

I think any animal meat will work. The more fat the better. I feel that fat (oil) is more important than blood. Seems like oils stay with the bait longer than blood.

Went run my 50 hooks this morning and it was pitiful!!! I think not having current changed the conditions. This was the same spot I've been fishing. All the Yeh Monn bait from @Sipsy was off the hooks. Most of the chicken was still on. It must come off easy after soaking in water. Didn't catch any fish on that line on either bait. That really sucks for me trying to do a comparison. Sorry Sipsy.

Thats how it goes, not to worry.

Hey man don’t worry. Thats why its called fishing instead of catching. Thanks for trying!

I'm going to try and get some lines out tonight. Havent run any this week, kinda got sidetracked. I think I'm going to exclusively run the bait you gave me. My experience is that running two baits side by side, only the better bait gets bites. IE, soap and chicken will result in just chicken getting hit. But run it by itself, and you'll get hits on soap just fine. May even catch as many or more fish on inferior bait if that's what you're making readily available to them.

Since @swampsnyper already tried side-by-side, this will be something different. I'll try to also run some in current and some in still water to see if there's a difference

That sounds great, if it works I’ll send you some more. If not, I’ll says thanks for trying.

Another single this morning..... from what ive experienced so far as far as bait goes....the store bought baits work good for cats and cut bait catches turtles and mudfish...lots of mudfish. Today was 1 cat, 6 muds, and 2 turtles 20200606_140411.jpg

What’s a mudfish? A Grinnel? Is a mudfish = grinnel = bowfin??

Correct.....trash fish
Bowfin are a much maligned fish. If they are skinned and cleaned by wiping down with paper towels with NO water, and cooked the same day, they are excellent table fare.

Our family has eaten them for decades and placed them before guests at our table that had no clue what they were eating, with rave reviews.
